So, when im riding between 15-35 mph i get this strange surging. bike feels like it speeds up and slows down on its own. very minor, but the speed limit on my street is 15mph, and on most of the base its 20 mph, so this gets kind of annoying. 2004 xb9r, just put in new plugs, new oil, new uni air filter. this weekend going to change trans oil (15w20 m1 syn i think), check the primary chain, adjust the clutch, and install one of those easy clutch things. bike idles at right above 1k rpm, and its been doing this since before i changed the plugs and air filter. any ideas on how to reduce it? anyone had this happen to em? |

when was the last time you reset the TPS? |

Never.... Bike has 8k miles on it, TPS reset is due at 10K. I guess i need to pick up a cable and learn how to do it. No reason to live with this is it can be fixed. |

yeah I'm not guaranteeing anything here, but I always like to start with the simple! seeing as tho you will eventually want a cable, its essentially free for you to reset it now, so I would start there. |

Hopefully you meant 15w50. Surging is typically due to uneven combustion. It can be caused by a spark plug issue or timing. If it started after you changed spark plugs, I would verify the gap and see if you have a plug going bad. |

yep, meant 15w50... it was going on before plugs were replaced. after doing a few searches, it seems this is a common issue, but i have not found a solution yet. tps reset would be the 1st thing to do it seams though. just ordered a cable... wonder is i can data log to my cell phone? |

If your cell phone is a x86 based Windows powered phone or runs on PalmOS, then yes. If you don't understand the last sentence, then there is a 99.9% chance the answer is no. I've been working on getting something fabbed up for WM6, no solution yet |

Froggy- Have you ever used remote desktop on portable devices? I use it on my Nokia 770 and used to use it on a WinMo phone to control my desktop from just about anywhere. I wonder if it could be rigged to work through that on a decent cell connection? Hmmm.... |

the phone is a wm 6.1 phone. if wm6 will not do it neither will 6.1. |

I'm experiencing the same thing... Bike is '03 XB9R (race ecm, race filter, remus exhaust) and the surging started to be really annoying after the bike was in for 24 kkm service last week (24kkm ~ 15000 miles). It was present before but not so pronounced I'm experiencing it now. I did TPS reset today but surging is still there and it feels that also idle is worse than it was before. I'm just wondering what could they have done to get it that bad? And other nice things about service were that obviously they rode the bike without seat being correctly installed, now the seat "keeper lip" is chewed and the holder is bent. They also scratched the primary cover and they were nice enough to tell me that rear brake pads needed to be replaced but of course they wouldn't just replace those, altough I told them to do what they think should be done, just to call me if there were extra expenses. I've been servicing my harleys myself, obviously my expectations for services are just too high. Sorry for the rant, I'm just a bit pissed after spending quite a bit of money for the service, won't happen again. |

There are a few posts in the KV about the issue. some say its due to the TPS needing to be reset, some say the bikes running lean causing it to hunt. im going to try the reset, and if its still an issue may try adding some fuel to the low end (if i can become proficient with the program). |

I would throw the stock air filter back on there just to see if it stops. |

What rpm is the idle? If set high it can deviate. I had problems till I turned the idle down to where the needle just wavers at 1000rpm and just slightly above. |

Mine also has the in-town speed surge. I just kinda figured it was the nature of the beast since I have never been on any other buell. I have done a tps reset and nothing changed. |

Samppa: check your throttle-body intake seals. The '03 seals like to dry out and start leaking, which can cause some surging. |

Andymnelson, If you know someone that can write a Linux compatible version of ecmspy that will run on our Maemo devices, (I got a N800), your idea might just work. Only issue then is interfacing with the ECM, which might be doable with a bluetooth adapter. I got WM6.5 on my phone (unlocked and reflashed Touch Pro), I will try playing around and seeing if remote desktop works good enough for our purposes. If so, I will snag up and bluetooth adapter and see if its possible to rig up something crazy. |

Went for a ride today and guess what... The surge/stutter isn't there. After last ride I redid a TPS reset but I think this thing is weather related, today it was about 5C colder that last time I rode the bike. Have to check those intake seals, thanks. If the seals are original, they're probably due change soon anyway. |

well, adjusted the clutch, installed the X-soft ezclutch ramp, lubed the clutch cable, changed primary oil, checked the chain (its 1/2 free play cold at the tightest point so did not adjust). still surging. will adjust the idle next. my ecm cable is ordered.... if it ever gets here will try a reset. froggy - my phone has a usb port. getting it to understand the data is what i cant figure out. the pc verson requires a driver to convert the data? if data counld just be loged on the phone and then transfered to a pc for review you could log just about every rider you make. bluetooth would be nice thought... I have a AT&T tilt (hate it) |

I rerouted my crankcase breathers, and it smoothed it out. It's not gone, just smoother. Less noticeable. |

Ill give that a shot this weekend if the idle thing does not help. what size tube does the breather use? |
