This is a 2008 XB12scg in Black. I'm not sure if I should go with black because one of the things I love about these bikes is the translucent airbox. Also did anything get upgraded between the 08 and the 09 model? What would be a good price for this shipped to me? I wonder why no warranty? And also if someone else decides they might want it please post up so we aren't bidding against each other. I am patiently waiting for the right XB to come along. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&item=130311713239&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK %3AMEWAX%3AIT&salenotsupported |

Looks like they used header wrap as a ghetto heat shield. ~SM |

From the listing: You are looking at a 2008 Buell Lightning XB12Scg 25th Anniversary Edition. The machines we list have been checked over by our in-house service department and are completely functional unless otherwise stated in the description. This machine runs like it should! This Buell is slightly used and is in pretty good condition as the pictures show. There are some very minor scratches on the gas tank. The left side of the machine has some scuffs. See pics. Thank you and good luck bidding!! So, um, they don't know where the gas tank is, but yet, they do know how it should run? |

Dont let color sway you from buying a lightning. If you keep your eyes open on here you will find someone to trade. I bought my bike in march and am already on my 4th color. |

Do you really want to look at a Buell being sold by someone who thinks the airbox is the gas tank? Buy from a Badwebber. I did, for my '06 12Ss; had it shipped from Florida, from a great guy. Here's a translucent '07 Scg not 10 miles from me, that I would be happy to look over for you. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 467055.html?1244724680 (Message edited by fahren on June 11, 2009) |

Do you really want to look at a Buell being sold by someone who thinks the airbox is the gas tank? I wouldn't necessarily slight the bike itself for that. I just found it amusing. Buyer beware. |

My bigger concern would be that they just power washed it for the pics. Seems to me, from what I've read here, that means the wheel bearings are pretty well shot and there is now a bit of water in the oil. |

I have never bought a new car, truck or bike. It always makes me nervous that I have no idea the real reason it is being sold and how it was treated. I would like to buy a new bike but if I can save 4 grand, why not? What are some things to look out for on a late model XB? |

One question, what is the canister just above the shifter? |

Charcoal canister for California emissions |

That is a charcoal canister for CA emissions. Was the bike bought in CA then moved to MN in a year? Could be. The evident scratches and missing logos on the airbox cover point toward a dropped bike. Then again, some people take off the Buell logos. |

Probably only came with a 1 year warranty? Build date is likely in '07. |

Caveat f'kin' emptor. Set a max bid you can live with, and know realistically that there needs to be a budget for work once you get it (not just color change). Compare that to what you see posted here in classified ads for the bike you really want. If the ebay bike gets close or goes over your max, think a lot about it. Depends on how much time you want to spend tinkering vs how much time riding. You don't know how this bike was broken in; how it was treated. Could be a diamond in the rough, or could just be... rough. |

All the 08's are still under warranty for at least a few more weeks, assuming you got the first one off the line. I would double check that there is a warranty on it, perhaps someone with dealer access can run the VIN? Hell he didn't post the full VIN, something could be up. |

There are plenty other things to worry about other than the emissions canister. My bike has it and it is just as strong as the rest and can be removed. But it could be a good bike! It could also be a bad buy, I personally will never purchase a bike or car online. So take that as you may, but there are probably many more buells that you can come across local or semi local to check out in person. Like the others said be careful, I think everyone here is trying to help you make a good solid buy. good luck |

Thanks all. All the points you have made are making me second guess this buy. I still have thoughts of a used bike but have narrowed the search area down to travel distance to personally inspect or at least a member of BadWeb. |

I was doing the same thing as you. I had a "great deal" lined up on ebay and started asking them questions. Before I was done, I had a gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach about buying it. Glad I listened to it. I found a bike a week later 20 miles from me at an even better deal. |

I would pass on that one. There are plenty of '08 models out there for about 9k WITH a warranty. I have a feeling the reserve on this particular auction is going to be around the MSRP as it's from a dealer. Just my opinion though. I'd suggest taking the time to get what you want. Buyers remorse is a bitch.... (Message edited by Brandon_m on June 12, 2009) (Message edited by Brandon_m on June 12, 2009) |

That half-assed heat shield could be hiding a dent in the header. |

Not to mention the replaced frame pucks could be hiding dents. The thing clearly has seen the ground. |

I have bought 9-10 vehicles on eBay, most of them on the east coast (I live in MN). I always factor in the cost of a flight out there, fuel and hotel home, and the "risk factor". Last I calculated it, I have purchased about $50,000 worth of cars for about $20,000. Not bad. The worst I have had to do is flush all fluids and do full tune ups- but you need to leave room in your budget for those things. For this bike, you prob need to consider what it's value is considering it has bee laid down. Subtract your costs for getting it to you, and at least $1500 for repairs/mods needed and make that your high bid. |
