'09 XB12Ss, if I only do an air filter and muffler mod, and I can reflash the stock ECM, what would be the advantage to installing a race ECM? Or am I just throwing away $250 clams?? Also, I had the airbox apart to check out things as part of the 1500 mile service, and my bike doesn't have an opening leading down to the air scoop like some of the others I've seen opened on here. Did the older bikes come that way or is it something they've opened up on their own? Why would Buell have changed it?

Hotrod - Last I saw the Race ECM for DDFI3 ('08+ XB's) was $775 from the dealer. Also, you cannot purchase one without a current race license. The older Race ECM for '07 and down Buells is the $250 model that you refer to. You cannot interchange them.

The snorkel hole you refer to was for the Buells that had the earlier, more restrictive inner air boxes. The bike you have has a much more open inner air box, which negates the need for the snorkel. Another advantage to the closed snorkel hole is slightly higher fuel capacity. I could be wrong, but I "think" the last year for the snorkel was 2006.

Ok, I'm corrected on the price, but that doesn't really answer my question. Whats so different between the race and stock ECMs? Will the race ECM allow me to run a front O2 sensor, or mebbe a wide-band sensor? And I understand the inner airbox cover has more open area than past models, but there aren't any more openings to atmosphere in the outer airbox. All I can see is the small mesh opening in the front behind the fuel filler area, and about an 1/8" gap around the bottom of the airbox base. Where's the extra air coming from that they decided to close off the "ram air" scoop? And I don't see getting extra fuel capacity, because the notch on the inner frame wall is still there... just no corresponding hole in the bottom of the airbox housing? I must be missing something...

The Race ECM comes with tuning software and is fully programmable. I believe the stock ECM will allow you to use dual sensors, but you will need a 3rd party program to read and reprogram it. American Sport Bike is working on it, and should have support for your bike soon.

About the airbox, the older XB's (2005 and older) did not have the mesh opening, the airbox was completely sealed and air only got in from the snorkel. As for the fuel, the extra capacity is there. The 2005 and older XB's are 3.7 gallon, the 2006 and newer 52" wheelbase models are 3.82 gallon. The 2006+ 54" wheelbase bikes are 4.4 gallons.
