Reason I ask is I have not. He's given me a handful of maps to try and they have all ran Poorly.

Perhaps its not the maps but something else? Did you reset your TPS, also what kind of AFV are you getting?

Your the first person I've heard who's had bad luck. I've heard he's been spot on by the 3rd map . Done deal.

I worked with him some last year and never could get any of his maps working well. I pinged him the other day to see if he had any new tricks I could use. Still no luck.

The maps just don't make sense either. He does some timing adjustments on the front and rear maps. Each timing map remaining unique to the cylinder. Then the fuel maps are just copies of each other. The front fuel map is just the rear +2 across the board.

How can there be different timing maps, but basically equal fuel maps?

I'm just curious how many have actually had his map work well on their bike. Rather than just "I heard they work well..."

I'm also not trying to say anything bad about him at all.

Have you done any data logging yet? I don't think he changes much until he sees what your specific bike is doing. I could be wrong.

No maps, but he did e-mail me suggestions and ECM changes which were helpful. Data logging also helped a lot. The thing that really helped was removing the NB o2 and installing an LC-1 & WB o2.

I loaded 2007 race maps into my ECM, left his suggestions in place and set the LC-1 @ 13.8:1. These changes have been in for 2000+ miles and the bike runs GREAT!

I did data log but found the stock race maps and an AFR of 13.8:1 work best.

I have a feeling this is going to become a very interesting thread.

A lot of people swear by Xopti's work, you're the first I've heard to have an issue.

Any time I've asked questions, he's taken the time to explain until I understand the answer.

I have been running an Xopti for about 10k miles, great, never had a problem. I did about 3 data logging sessions emailing maps back and forth and every time the butt dyno said it got faster and smoother idle and acceleration.

Have you data logged yet?

I'm wanted a plug & play 'map' and sought Mike's help.
My motorcycle's five years old, common, and lightly modified.
Mike tried three times to deliver, but the resulting product was no-way plug & play.
He stood by his work, offering follow-up & suggestions. Wanted to continue via data-feedback, "virtual tuning". I chose not to proceed that way.

How is your bike running? There might just be something else wrong with it that is causing the rough running, and it not be the fuel maps.

Last fall I bought a 2nd header and datalogged on both cylinders with o2 sensors on each pipe. I've done a ton of datalogging.

I always go back to the stock maps that came with my bike. It had the race ecm already installed when I bought it.

My bike runs pretty good now from changes I made to it. I adjusted the idle using ego corr on both cylinders and I figured out that I could change the O2 sensor voltage settings and make the bike run slightly richer in Closed loop.

I figured out those things after the initial failed attempt with mikes maps. He even gave me his phone number to call him. My bike originally didn't run well at low rpms/ low tps.

"How is ... bike running? ... might be something else."

Yes, I'm presently experiencing your point: leak(s) at air intake manifold.
My mistakes and the machine's general tune/condition would affect my experiences, of course.
However, during subject times, bike ran and held stable AFV @ 100 +/- 10 with its "as purchased + ECM Spy manual" map.
His work did deliver/promise more grunt down low; second map/trial, it felt like bike tried to jump out from under me!
Mike described other tweaks to EPROM settings, not only fuel maps and timing. I don't understand most of it, and so wasn't comfortable leaving it in-place.

I am green as grass tuning EFI. But, it's been interesting and entertaining; much more fun than carb jetting changes.
I learned from working with Mike.
And, many thanks to ECM Spy's authors for the opening the playground.

I had mike remap my bike twice first with the stock exhaust than again after putting a voodoo pipe on it runs so much better than it ever did on the stock mapping. Much cooler to. I had to put a right sided air scoop on because my bike was running so hot with the stock mapping now the cooling fan almost never comes on.

My bike has been Xoptimized as I call it. Could not be happier!! I sent him my datalogs 3 times and have noticed an improvement throughout the range. Mike is also a stand up guy and would do anything to help you figure it out. Sounds like you are missing a piece of the puzzle or are just unlucky I guess.

obviously we're not getting all the facts here.

you do realize there a a lot more factors involved besides timing and fuel maps in how the bike runs.

did you verify ALL mechanical hardware is in good working order? have you done any logging and allowed Xopti to analyze it?

If you dont understand why timing maps can differ and fueling be similar, then perhaps EFI tuning is still out of reach for you. There are a LOT of "internet Tuners" out there and of course everyone knows everything when it comes to the web, but Id like for you to see if there are other issues the bike is having before tuning.

when was the last time someone took their car to the dyno with an oil leak, boost leak, and a hole in the coolant line? everything needs to be perfect BEFORE tuning. perhaps there is something that was missed???

trying to help you figure this out.

Not sure why some people get results, while others dont. As some have said, perhaps their bikes were not running 100% before hand.
I can only give my experience, which was positive.
I have a 07 xb12Ss, and did a open airbox with a jardine, and race ecm. That thing coughed, and popped so much it was annoying to ride the bike.
Mike did two initial tunes, and solved all the coughing at idle, and most of the popping. Then after 3 datalogging runs the bike has run perfect. I have never heard of anyone getting a jardine not to pop on decel, and mine didnt at all. Now I have switched to a gutted and baffled stock can. Took his initial tune before the datalogging, and did some logging with that pipe. Same results. He has always been there, always willing to help until you are satisfied.
Thats my experience, and would highly recommend him.
As GB and others said, there might be other underlying issues, or other user errors in the tunning that you are not realizing. While ecmspy is a great program, it is very specific, and one wrong click can totally change your results.

Just to reiterate. My bike runs really well with the default settings on my race ecm with the o2 sensor voltage changed and the idle smoothed out in the fuel maps.

Initially my bike had a few hiccups at low rpms and low tps.

I went to mike for help and my bike alway digressed. Even now when I apply his changes my bike goes from running well to running poorly.

Yes, I have verified there are no exhaust leaks and intake leaks.

Gbalias - Can you explain why it's ok to have different timing maps but similar fuel maps? I agree there are lots of internet tuners. I've seen a ton of wrong information posted here.

I choose not to follow-thru with data-logging and refinements.
Did build a cable/converter for my Palm (used recipe from Mike's website), but the electronics workmanship is so ugly I can't bring myself to plug it the motorcycle.
: )
My choices do not reflect badly on Mike's services or abilities; even if his 'map' is not loaded-up.
Happy to support his website anyway.
Thankful to him for access to a variety of 'map' examples to study.
Reportedly, American Sportbike's map would not be plug 'n play for me, either: its basis includes air box and filter mods missing from my machine.

It's just like going to a good mechanic. There is always at least one person who has a bad experience. If the map he does for you is not working then go educate yourself on mapping and do it yourself.

fueling is a function of thermal management when youre within the power range. you wont extract more power from varying AFRs.

your ign timing is key here. you have to consider both cylinders pulling from the same 'straw'. VE will vary b/w the two at different RPMs. (among many other things)

Xopti is a genius when it comes to Buell motorcycle tuning. He was able to transform my wifes 06 XB12SS from a ridiculously hot running, poor accelerating, ready to trade in and take a loss impulse buy into a finely tuned motorcycle that she wants to keep and really enjoys riding. It is rare to find a person who is willing to share his knowledge and help anyone who asks. Mike (Xopti) does GREAT work!!!

Just started working w/ Xopti on my bike's program. I'm not sure what the previous owner did to the ECM after modifying the exhaust, but it ran like shite. I sent Mike a list of modifications (plus $), and he sent me a new eprom file.

So far my bike is running MUCH better. He's also been super helpful making adjustments to the map.

I'd recommend his programs/advise to anyone.

Mike was very helpful with my map. My bike runs scary fast now, when I first installed it and went riding it almost threw me off the back end when I punched it. His knowledge of the bike is top notch and I'm extremely satisfied with the map he provided.

A question for all of you that have had good luck. Did you start with the race ecm or the stock ecm?

Was your bike originally running poorly with the stock ecm or the race ecm?

it doesnt matter what you started with really.

but i started with a race tuned stock ecm. hehe.

but i dont really count since i do tuning anyways....but, ive collaborated with mike a lot over many issues. always with a good result.

you still havent let us know if there are any issues with the bike that you might have overlooked the first time. or are you still stuck on it running poorly due solely on the mapping?

you said you did a LOT of logging. maybe youre logging and doing the analysis wrong or using the wrong table for the algorhythm for calculating new pulsewidth values.

i think the best way is to return the ECM to bone stock, do some logs, then send Xopti the logs AND the EEPROM you logged with on the bike. is that how you did it?

I started with a modified map. I gave Xopti a call. I gave him all my information on mods. I got in return great comunication, fast response time, and an out of this world map for my 12. I've got nothing but Great Praise for THE MAN. He nailed it the driveability is Insane compared to the old map I had. I wish you good luck but I find it hard to believe it's tuning. Xopti's a good man the negative comments suck.
