I plan to order a new filter in the next few days and am wondering if K&N is the best way to go. Is there anything else available/better? Next question. Is this:
Just as good as this:
I know there's countless threads on this and I have searched (that's how I got the pics) but I didn't run across one that said if the results would be the same as the American Sport Bike kit. Maybe I just got tired of looking, there's only about eleventy-gazillion threads about hacking up the airbox. Thanks. |

And it's all just for bragging rights unless you get more air TO....the air box. And then you've got this tiny little throttle body to feed with these huge holes. Kind-of-a worthless effort when there are better things to do that "are" worth the effort in the actual quest for power. Mike |

Home made open airbox kits tend to look like crap under the semi transparent plastics. |

I don't have transparent plastics so this is not an issue. I would just like to know if the homemade box will produce the same results as the American Sport Bike kit. Homemade would yield the factory locations for the hoses so that seems like a plus right there. |

To answer your question YES they will flow the same the only difference is the fit and finish and thats all up to you.I know you are a body estimator so it should be a pretty easy mod for you if not ask a body guy thats what all my writers did when I did body work.WELLLLLL as long as you get them the hours they are asking for on the repair supplements. |

Alright so here is my thought (please correct me if i'm wrong, before I hack my inner cover up), I have a '05 so I have the hole in the frame. If I do not vent the outer cover of my airbox, doing the inner airbox delete really won't provide me with any performance advantage right? Other than noise... I'm getting remapped by xopti very soon so I am trying to get all air mods finished before I start data logging. |

Oxygen151 I would say your right but I vented my 05 XBR and it looks great and I did notice a difference. So if your up to the mod of venting the outer cover I say cut it. |

I guy named Craig from a company called Image Airbrush did it for me. He does fantastic work and also paints goalie masks for the NHL. www.imageairbrush.com check him out, he has a picture of my bike on his website.

Thanks Fast and everybody else for your input. Looks like I'll be cutting Sunday. BTW: I don't have to ask my body guys too many questions. I do a little body work and paint on the side, I just like the A/C better than the dust. |

Cutting the inner box made mine run smoother. I think its because I'm trying to get the same amount of air through a bigger hole. |

I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere but... Do you guys also remove the rubber snorkel? or does it provide some sort of seal that should be there between the lower box and the upper? also, where can I get rubber gaskets and mesh for the holes I would cut in the tank cover? |

My snorkel is gone. The previous owner took it out. Some say it helps, but I don't know the difference. |

I'm pretty sure my snorkel is still in place. Unless the previous owner took it out I will be removing this as well. Maybe I'll take it out before I cut the box and I can give you my take on it. |

How about rubber seals for the holes created in the plastics? |

What do you want to "seal?" |

the first question i ask myself befor i start a new modification. What does the race bike have? use that as a platform to start from. in this case, what does the inside of the racebikes airbox got. stock? American Sport Bike kit? i don't know personaly, but when i do decide to get more air in, i'm gonna find out. |

zat- I want to "seal"/ "gasketize" the cut tank plastic after I modify it. Also would like to put mesh or some kind of metal screen inside the holes I would be cutting. |

Still not sure what you want to seal but if you cut like in the pic, no extra sealing is necessary. No real need to use mesh either but if you did, I would just put the mesh over the hole in the frame where the air first comes in. I think most car guys just go to Home Depot and get gutter screen or something like that. |

You can get mesh screen at auto parts stores (Advance, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's) or use the gutter guard from Lowes or Home Depot. I'm also unclear on what you want to "seal." Do you mean you want to seal the hole in the outer cover to the hole in the inner cover or are you just looking for something to trim the edge of the hole in the outer cover to give it a more finished look instead of just having a hole cut in the airbox cover? |

Zat, I went with the American Sport Bike cover because my '03 inner cover didn't have the little cone/dimple that smooths out air flow into the throttle body. I could have gotten a newer inner box with the cone and cut that up... but if I was going to buy something I figured the American Sport Bike cover was worth the extra $$ Since you also have an '03 that might be something to consider. I think what hes talking about is cutting holes in the plastic out air box cover to make opening up the inner air box worth doing. instead of leaving gaping holes (that probably will not look too good) he wants to install a rubber gasket to make the edges look finished with a metal mesh filling in the void. there are pics somewhere on the board of peeps who have done the same thing. |

I was looking for an cheap air box to remove the mesh peace next to the gas filler and attach to my 04 XB. have not been able to find one cheap enough to make it worth doing. I wish you could purchase it as a seprate part from Buell I dont know how just removing the black plastic trim from the gas fill would look, but it would be an easy quick fix and it can be reattached if you dont like it. |

Gbaz check this out. Not super cheap, but a hell of a lot cheaper than a new or used airbox with the vent. http://www.mcmaster.com/#92725t22/=235jqz |

OK, air box is hacked up. Apparently the previous owner removed the snorkel as it wasn't there. I do have a question though. In the above pic there are 2 channels for the hoses to route. Mine only has one and it was hooked to a hard plastic tube that runs along the inside of the frame to just above the rear swingarm. Is this normal? Anyway...impressions. I didn't notice any more noise but then again my muffler is somewhere between F'n loud and piss off the neighbors loud. It does seem to pull harder in all gears and run a little smoother. Overall I'm happy with it. Now I need to get some holes in the outer cover to feed it better. |

Zatco, could you take a picture? There is one hose that runs above the airbox, its connected to the frame by the gas cap, its the fuel vent hose. It runs down to the left foot peg. Inside the airbox in between the air filter and the velocity stack there is 2 hoses, both of those are the crank breathers. |
