When I changed my oil the other day I noticed a shitload of metal shavings stuck to the magnet on the drainplug. I mean they were piled onto it. I Never seen that much on anything. I was using mobil1 V-twin and had only been 2500 miles or less. I replaced the mobil with amsoil. I'm planning on sticking with the Amsoil as it seems to run smoother and cooler, but is that normal to see so much metal? |

seems odd. you have an '04 xb12. i put mobil 1 v-twin in my '04 bolt back in the fall. i am due to change the oil and now i am wondering if i'll find the same. |

I do ride my bike kinda hard at times, but mostly just cruising. I always expect to find a few but this just seemed excessive. |

Could they have been accumulated shavings in the case that emerged due to a change in oils? |

Start saving money for engine overhaul. Debris in oil will kill roller bearings sooner or later, and there are lots of it. Also check oil pump gear. |

Was it the primary/tranny oil? That gets tons of shavings from the primary chain. That would be normal. What sucks is when you get chunks of primary chain showing up on the drain plug...hope that never happens again. |

If it's the engine oil, definitely check the oil pump drive gear. There are many threads here about how to do it. It's easy to check, hard to replace, but it can wreck your engine if it breaks while it's running. 2006 & 2007 bikes have an upgraded gear available from Buell; 2008-up bikes have new oiling system that eliminated this weak point. |

Dunno if XB cases are the same, but my X1 has a small drain plug in the bottom of the cases above the exhaust. It's a lot more involved than the manual's procedure for oil changes, but you could pull that and drain 100% of the oil to see what's sitting at the bottom, then refill and check it later to see what's in it. Just make sure to get oil pumped back through the engine before you start it. Draining out of that plug will get oil out of a lot of important places that are left alone during the normal manual oil change procedure. On another note, I like having a magnet somewhere in the engine's oil system. You can buy lifetime oil filters with a magnet built in, or there are curved magnets available that are designed to wrap around a specific size of oil filter. Anything to grab all of those shavings and prevent them from constantly circulating through your engine. |

Put a couple "rare earth" magnets on the bottom of your oil filter. It should help reduce the amount of shavings. |
