I have an XB9S and I get 46-47 all the time. 25% city 75% highway driving. Usually shift @ 3500 RPM. Cruise the highway at 70-75 @ 4000-4300 RPM. |

What year? What oil are you running? My 08 12R with its notoriously bad fuel mileage compared to older XB's gets 44-46 consistantly since switching from the regular HD dino oil, to the Screaming Eagle Syn3. Thats up from 38-42 avg. My best tank so far, was 46mpg. Mostly cruising around 90-100 for the whole tank, with some extended bursts up to 130-140, gotta love road trips through wide open spaces. The last tank run through it looks even better, riding 2 up at normal speeds. I'll know for sure when I finally fill it up again as soon as I get some new rubber. My bike gets better mileage the hotter it runs, the harder I ride, the better it seems to get. Could this be an oil issue? Is the oil too thick, are we not getting as much efficiency as we could be? Anybody tried thinner oils than the factory reccomends?. (Message edited by SRWitt on May 27, 2009) |

Fuel economy will greatly vary depending on the fuel, road conditions, how you ride, and dozens of other factors. I average 60mpg on my 2006 XB12, and depending on how many wheelies I do it can drop to around 50mpg, or if I am gentle I can get 75mpg. |

Froggy, were talking MILES per gallon, not SMILES per gallon. :-) |

On my 03 XB9R just cruising on the highway at 70MPH I can get around 55mpg. Combined city highway drops to around 45. |

My 12R consistantly averages 53. Fun or slow. |

using 20W50 syn 3. Im guessing the short trips to work are causing low MPG. im not really that far off of some. just wanted to check. bad mpg could be a sign of problems... |

Damn Froggy! did you disconnect one of your fuel injectors? You're getting better mileage than a stock Blast! Are you sure your math is right? If so what is your secret?? |

Math is correct, 210 miles on 2.8 gallons of gas. Its a combo of hypermiling and the high altitude when that happened. I did the 75mpg only once, gotten close a few times. |

I seem to always get over 60mpg on my XB9S On some trips over 70mpg. |

I consistently nail 53 mpg with my 2006 Ss. But the 12's are geared a little higher than the 9's, so a little better mpg on the highway is to be expected. Froggy, I've read a little on hypermiling in a car... what's your technique on a bike? ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on May 27, 2009) |

My last tank netted me 46 mpg with a city/highway mix. That's my personal best. I usually get low 40's, and I ride it hard (2008 12R). |

The short and sweet version: Short shift, be smooth, avoid braking and stops, maintain a constant speed. Conserving momentum. One trick I like called pulse and glide, it doesn't really work well on the Buell because it loses speed too fast. That trick is best for a empty highway, accelerate to about 10mph above the limit (say 65 for a 55), squeeze the clutch, toggle the kill switch off and on to stop the engine, drop down to 45mph, gently release the clutch, then accelerate and repeat. But like I said, doesn't work out that great for us but works fantastic on a hybrid car. |
