So I had my bike at the dealership for a couple of warranty issues (that actually turned into three warranty repairs while I was there - doh). Anyway, I asked the tech about the issue with checking the oil on the 2008 bikes. Come to find out this tech has had multiple people ask him the same question and he had just last week talked with the techs directly at Buell. Surprisingly they told him we need to check the oil WHILE THE BIKE IS RUNNING...after it's been warmed up, of course. And as long as the oil measures anywhere within the XXXX area, it's all good. Hmmm...never would have thought that. Do that with a car and you get all sorts of bad readings. But sure enough...I've checked the oil a couple times since getting it back with the bike hot and running, and it seems to be in the same place each time so far. Consistency at long last perhaps? So for those experiencing the highly inconsistent oil level readings on 2008's, give it a shot and speak up how well it works for you. |

I've always done that (checked with it running, that is). You can at least tell if it's used any that way. Still doesn't solve the problem when you change it though... hopefully they discouraged draining it with it running. |

Thump4fun- That's good info. A LOT of people have had issues with checking the oil level on 08's. Saratoga- You don't need to check the oil when you change it- put the correct amount in (2.5 quarts w/filter) and you're good to go. |

Hmmm, seems like the people who were checking within 30 seconds of shutoff were onto something. |

Not necessarily. It was closer, but still pretty inconsistent. My process was to park it, get my gear off and a towel ready, then start it back up for a minute, shut it down and immediately check the level. It seemed to work half the time, but was still inconsistent the other half. So far though checking it running seems to be pretty consistent. *crosses fingers* |

Is this only a problem in 2008's versus older models? XB12 vs XB9? |

It is an issue on all 2008 and newer XB models. |

I tried this but it seemed the oil was flung up all the way to the top. Has anyone tried the heat shrink tubing on the dip stick? Someone did it on here. I was wondering if there was any adverse effects. |
