Out for a ride yesterday, got a loud CLUNK when grabbing front brake after a pee stop. Looked down, and had lost a caliper bolt. Luckily Home Depot was literally 20' away, so I got another bolt and went on my way.

Brakes felt weird though - had to pull the lever more than 50% before I got any stopping power. Then I'd have no brakes, then regular, then this 50% business again. Figured I just needed to bleed them or something. I thought I felt a slight wobble in the front end, but figured I was just being paranoid after the brake incident.

Got 40 miles down the road, definite headshake now. Coast to the shoulder on the rear brake, look at front wheel - I can see the right side ball bearings. Great.

Got a guy from my GA m/c forum to bring me to the nearest dealer, which happens to be a Buell dealer as well... Tech bring me back to the shop and points out where a chunck of my inner wheel (hub, really) is now missing. Once I got the bike home and took the thing apart, I see that the axle is pretty well shot as well...and the bearing screwed up the right side fork stanchion. The once-flat surface is no longer flat.

Can I replace just that stanchion, or do I have to replace the whole right side fork tube??

I'm not sure.
Give Charlie a call, he's done enough forks to know.
Hate to hear of the misfortune.
That sux.

Do you have pictures? Being aluminum it could likely be filed back to flat if it isn't too bad.

Bump... Haven't had a chance to call a dealer about getting the stanchion separately, nor to call Charlie...

Just the lower aluminum part is not available separately. You will need to purchase the entire male slider. If you do, it comes with new fork seals and bushings for reassembly. BUT... if your "damage is minor, you may be able to clean it up and go. The best approach would be to "spot-face" the surface to keep it as flat as possible. If you file it, get it flat and square so you do not have another bearing failure. Lastly, If you have to "remove" 1/16" of material to get it back into shape. Then make or buy a washer that is 1/16" thick to go back in place of what you removed. This will keep the brake rotor and caliper in factory alignment. There is most likely enough travel in the caliper pistons and "float" on the rotor to make up a 16th or so, but why not just put it back correctly and not worry.

Bcool83 ihave a pair of wrecked forks that I can get rid of, the stanchion (didnt know it was called that) is still good from what I can see. If you can tell me how to get it off the tube (tried before) I can sell it to you, it is from a 06 xb. Or if you want ill sell the whole fork.

I'll do that Glitch...

Etennuly, it's pretty far gone. Don't have any pics uploaded yet, but a good 1/4" was ground off the forks already - I'd have to use a spacer of some kind if I filed it back to flat.

I guess that's a good point Ochoa...

Are 9 forks the same as 12 forks? Right now there are only 12 forks on ebay... and NO forks on any Buell forums, nor on craigslist.

Bill, what year is your bike?

Just call me if you can.

FYI, you can change just the lower, but I dont know how and I have tried on a bent fork a half dozen times/ways. Traxxion can but it will be cheaper for new forks.
