Anyone else noticed any extra valve noise with the Mobil 1 20w50 full synthetic? It just seems like I'm getting more clacking than usual, and not just when it's cold. It's still noticeable after a hard ride, and I've got less than 20k miles on it...? ~SM |

I just switched to AMSOIL- same deal with mine. Did some looking around in the archives, seems normal.

Haven’t really noticed any increased valve noise since changing to Mobil 1, but the amount of oil being blown into the catch can has decreased significantly compared to Harley Syn 3. Still getting plenty of water out of it though. |

The only thing I've done that made a noticeable difference in valvetrain noise was carving open the airbox. ...the thing sounds like an octopus violently shaking spray paint cans, but it's always run great. |

Ah, well that might have something to do with it then. About the same time I got the '07 airbox cover. Stange that it should make the valves THAT much more noticeable though...? Maybe a combination of the two? ~SM |

It's not really strange - you've got a fairly direct line from your ears to the intake valves once you put holes in the upper airbox. It used to be sealed and completely enclosed in plastic. The difference between the older enclosed one and a home-grown or '07+ upper is dramatic in terms of how noticeable the valvetrain noise is. |

I don't hear any difference between HD oil and Mobil 1 in my bike. |

Mobil I, 15-50 here, no strange noises. All is well. There is a light ticking sound from the front cylinder at higher RPM's...but it was there when I bought the bike (used). The original owner used Harley synthetic oil. Mike |

there was a discussion about this on the harley forum.. the conclusion was that the motors were noisier with synthetic than with dino oil... |

I noticed this too and also saw an increase in fan usage, both in duration and amount. I switched to Ams and things seemed to run cooler and quieter. |
