So me and a buddy from work went for a ride today. Bike was running great and the weather was perfect. We turned down this twisted country road about 50mi into east bum f@#k where there are more cow's than people. As we came up to a road construction area the sign said pavement ends. No big deal right, so I slow down and prepare for it. Up came the loose gravel but was more like stones. I hear some pops from the tires like any other time when passing over gravel. Then the bike starts to fish tail a little and noticed that the rear tire that I just bought 1k mi ago was completely flat. I pulled over to the side of the road. WTF. There is a puncture in the tire about the size of a golf ball. |

What kind of tire was it? Did you find the culprit? I fear that dreaded flat miles from home, sorry to hear it. |

12 nails? Pfft...I once managed to get a 22" piece of rebar inserted into my tire and wrapped around the wheel. OK, OK, that was the truck, not a bike... |

A lady at work got a flat about 200' from the office. She ran over a sanding disk that was made to fit into a drill. Craziest thing I ever saw in person, a sanding disk hanging out of someone's tire. Lucky me got to be the one to change it for her. ~SM |

I popped a brand new Sync on a sharp rock while riding in gravel down at Snow Shoe. Seems like I get a flat every 3000 Miles. I'm definitely going with that Rhinoliner stuff next change. |

Sounds like some of you should seriously consider buying Avon tires. They make a great tire, but even better every Avon comes with a free road hazard warranty. As long as you have 6/32 tread left- you get a new tire shipped directly to you. The only cost to you is shipping the damaged tire back to Avon's US warehouse, and having the new tire mounted. I have personal experience with Avon tires (they're great), and have utilized their warranty (as simple as placing a phone call). The warranty is through Avon (not a dealer), and is included in the price of the tire. It's a no-brainer. |

A friend of mine lived in the area, good thing because he is moving to another town as I write this. The guy I was ridding with stayed with the bike's while I got my p/u truck. Funny thing is I was wondering why no one stopped to see if I needed help, even people on bikes. Then I realized that where I pulled over there was a porta pottie there. Probably thought someone was taking a crap. All I can tell you is that sucked big time. You would never think of that happening and I think it was just from a rock. I think the problem was I drove through the center and not the car tracks where the gravel was more packed. |

A week after getting back from riding from LA to DC and back I'm flying down a nearby back road at night two up with the GF. Go over an old railroad crossing doing about 45 with a good bit of lean on as it's in the middle of a sharp curve. One of the big spikes that holds down the wood 4x4 fillers between the rails is sticking up about half way and bent over so that the top of the head is facing me. A notch in the head catches my rear rim as I go by and bends out the right side edge and pops the bead. I was impressed how stable the bike was with an instant flat. But I didn't figure out what had happened until the next day. Worn out tire was fine but the rim was shot so I wound up replacing the whole rear end. Had to go back to the crossing in daylight to see what in the world could have done that. Should have bought a lottery ticket that night. |
