I dropped my 2005 XB12scg lightning in my driveway, like an idiot, and managed to crack the primary case cover as well as snap off the foot peg and the clutch lever. Can anyone recommend a site online where I can get replacement parts relatively cheap? I don't want to have to go to the local HD dealer, cause they are pretty pricey for everything.

Thanks.

Got to the sponsors section on this site.

All of them understand Buells, and most give a "Bad Web" discount.

I have found Trip at Precision HD/Buell to be particularly helpful, His phone number is: 401 724 0010.

I believe several sponsors offer Badweb discounts.

Shipping to Hawaii will hurt no matter what dealer you get it from, perhaps there by some chance is one local on ebay or craigslist?

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, shipping is going to suck. I'm surprised at how fragile the bike is. This is the second time it has been dropped, the first time it was on grass (not rolling) and the foot peg and clutch lever broke off that time too.I know I'm an idiot for dropping it, but you would figure they would be built a little tougher.

The bike is very tough, but every crash is different. My Uly was crashed over a dozen times, 99% of the time if I really wanted to fix it, all I would need was a turn signal lens and a frame puck.

Yes. The last one did her in, but only because the insurance company was a . All I needed was a swingarm, the rest was livable.

My driveway is on a pretty steep incline, with an even steeper entrance to the driveway that I have to make while turning. Long story short, the bike stalled during mid turn and I couldn't keep it from falling. Landed on the shift lever, which punched a hole in the primary cover. Bummer.
Primary cover hole.

I bet you could pull the cover, clean it up and get it welded by someone who can weld ALU then paint it and I bet it'd look as good as new. If nothing else It'd hold you until you could get a new one.

I was wondering about welding, but didn't know if that was possible. I thought it was made out of magnesium or something. Is it just aluminum?

also, would welding it void my warranty? Still have a year on the extended warranty that I bought, but I doubt it would cover dropping the bike : (

Its magnesium colored powder coat, but still made of aluminum. Welding it would void the warranty for that part, but a mishap like yours wouldn't be covered either way, thats where collision insurance comes in. If your deductible is super cheap you could go that route, but in the end it would be better to repair/replace the cover on your own.

Edit: The pic you posted is not the magnesium colored one, but your profile says 05 XB12SCG, which would come with the magnesium colored one.

Same thing exact thing happened to me. I pulled the cover (very simple) cleaned it and had it welded.Bought new gasket and 5000 miles later no problem.

shoot ,it looks like you can "J-B weld " that leaking cover without removing it from the bike.

When I wrecked a few years back, (Lowsided) I put a hole in the bottom of my case kind of like yours. I took it off cleaned it very well (you need to sand it down as there is a paint coating on the inside to keep the oil from leaching through the aluminum) and used aluminum putty, essentially gas tank repair. I repainted the whole shooting match, used the same putty on the outside to re-contour it to original and aint looked back since. As a side note, years ago, I put a hole in my Mustang GT's oil pan, I cleaned it and forced in some orange hi temp RTV, it stayed there and never leaked till I was able to pull the engine during a scheduled overhaul 2 years later. Modern "Fast Fixes" are pretty good, cheap and reliable.

is that really an option? has anyone else here tried that? I would be scared of it not holding, but that would be a lot easier. Also, those of you who have had welding done, about how much did that cost? I just checked with a local welder and he said he usually gets $200 to weld something. Thats almost as much as the part new.

What kind of paint did you use to repaint the inside?

$200.00 to weld it up? The guy's crazy! You can buy a new cover for around $230.00. Keep looking for a welder who's not on crack!

if you have that off the bike and all cleaned up, any decent welder would fix you up for a 12 pack and a thank you... that is a very easy fix and any guy that asks for money for that is a douche.

LOL, that's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. He was the first guy I called from Craigs List that advertised welding. Pretty much figured he was a prick when I told him that's almost as much as the part costs new and he said he could maybe do it for $100. I'll call around some more.

Any suggestions for the type of paint to use for when the welding is done, both inside and out?

Don't have a clue about the paint, but for the repair, try the local indy/custom shops and see who does their welding. Should be lots of great leads.....

Ok, found a local custom motorcycle shop (only one on the island) who agreed to weld it for me for $45. Way better than the $200 the other schmo wanted. As soon as I walked up with the cover in my hand, from 20 feet away he said "You ride a Buell, huh?" which made me feel good that he knows his stuff. He also said I could probably reuse the gaskets as long as they are in good condition, but since I already ordered the gasket kit, I think I'll wait and use new gaskets.

One other thing tho, I couldn't get the shifter lever off, and used a screw driver to pry open the pinch clamp a little. I guess you shouldn't do that, cause It snapped into two pieces pretty easily. Hopefully they carry that part at my local HD shop, and hopefully it's not very expensive. I'm going to call them and see.

Using the screwdriver is the way to do it. If you have a battery terminal puller, you could try that. http://s.sears.com/is/image/Sears/00999018000?hei= 100&wid=100&op_sharpen=1&qlt=75

Also, the lever is pretty cheap, maybe it was already cracked.

I'll bet that lever was going as it had a motorcycle dropped on it not to long ago!

Glad to see you got the case welded up for a reasonable price.

Another thing you can do to save a bit of trouble is to remove the peg feelers. A 3/8" wrench (I think) and they unscrew. I found they cause the peg to try and fold DOWN if you drop your bike or it falls over while idling (don't ask, ther're just like a spoiled kid, turn your back and they have a fit) Without the feeler the peg at least tries to fold up!

I keep a spare set of riders pegs and a shift lever on hand. I really should add a clutch lever and front brake and foot brake lever to the box. I'll never need them as long as I have them BUT give one away and you can be sure you'll break one and the dealer will be fresh out for 2 weeks!

Got the case back today. I think the custom shop did a pretty good job. Unless you are looking at it with a magnifying glass, you can't tell there was ever anything wrong with it from the outside. The inside shows, but who cares. He did the work of painting the outside too.
