1. I would love to see some pics. 2. How long should the smoke and or smell happen for on recently wrapped headers. |

Depends on how often the get wet, and how you treated them. First time mine werent bad, smoked a couple of days and smelled bad for a few weeks. last time (double wrap now) i sprayed them with bbq black paint at the same time so they stay black longer. they stunk something fierce for a long time. but now they dont smoke unless the bike sits long enough to get dust on the pipes. even when wet only smoke a little bit |

Ustorque - did you actually preheat the wrapped headers before using them or was that a joke? |

Ummm, for how long? Did it help them to not stink as much or what? Did it tighten up the wrap or melt it together a little bit or something??? |

I wrapped mine in 30min directly on the bike, rode the bike for 2 hours, and the smell is gone. Not sure why you'd want to take the headers off and bbq them, but it would certainly make the wrapping easier... |

the wrap coating (2500 degree ceramic paint) is supposed to be baked to correctly and fully cure. when baked the paint completely changes texture and becomes more of a ceramic than just paint....the wife would not allow me to bake them in the house, so i had to get creative and i did them on the grill....400 degrees for 30 min. this process can be done on the bike, the instruction on the wrap spray will tell you how. generally it's something like run the motor for 20 min, then cool...run the motor for 30 min, then cool....run motor for 45 min, then cool, and on and on. i had the bike ripped apart for the winter and took full advantage of wrapping and coating them as best i could so the wrap will last as long as possible. I want to wrap mine, but I'm scared to take them off. Un doing the engine mounts when I have a bad habit of dropping things could go all bad.. |

It is ok to double wrap them? The little instructions i got with the wrap said to make sure you didnt overlap more than 1/4". Certainly would last longer double wrapped though. |

Did mine this past weekend...on the bike. Getting the tape far up on the rear cylinder is a challenge, otherwise, as has been said, not a big deal. After finishing, I started the engine, let it smoke for two or three minutes. Let it cool, heated it up again for two or three minutes and let it cool. This morning when I started the engine, it smoked lightly while warming up. Less after getting gas. By the time I got to work (42 miles), I watched it before shutting it off....no smoke. One tight layer, (my 1125 has two layers). Mike |

I've been considering doing mine here soon since I have the ass end of the bike torn apart to replace the fan. It seems like a pain in the ass to do the wrap with the headers still on the bike. But time consuming if you were to rotate the engine to pull the headers off. Dunno... |

Wrapped mine on the bike. It took me about 1 hour. Only smoked for about 10 minutes.

WAVEX Why do your seat rails not touch the frame? I have studied the pic and it looks like you might have had spacers at one time....?? |

Speedfreaks101: I had the Adrenaline Moto spacers (for sale in the classified section), but I made my own spacers (I am missing the covers though)... |

Is that the front exit exhaust? I know the advantage of wrapping headers from the riders standpoint (less heat) and the cosmetic standpoint (looks cool IMO) but does the bike perfrom any different? |

It is a front exit exhaust. In theory the header wrap traps the heat inside the pipes. This increases the exhaust velocity and helps pull the exhaust gases out quicker. I personally did not notice a difference in performance. I did notice my right leg not getting so hot. |

Tattoo - Exits front and back or just the front one? Your bike probably needs its own thread now. lol |

Just the front. What you see in the back is a loop that runs the gasses back into the muffler and out the front. I've seen it on another forum but I can't remember the name of it. I'm sure Tattoo can enlighten us. |

front exit only...Tattoo is a sponsor( i believe) and member of . he runs "VooDoo mufflers" very cool designs for modified stock exhausts. |

I have heard stories about wrap headers getting bad after a while, like rusting and stuff like that. Any truth in there? |

All these pictures are the same roll of wrap, notice the color change to show off the black aging process. this is right after the install (yes painted with grill paint, I hate the silicon smell, and most people will bake the headers on a grill or oven to help the cure of the paint to make it super crispy black and durable. I did not)
I dont bake it for this picture, it has a nice graphite look for almost 5-6 months if you keep it dry.
and the most recent picture shows the age, I like this too for the mad max look, post apocolyptic cultures have header wrap right?
P.S.- yea, if you wrap your headers loose, they will have hot spots under the wrap where the air pockets are between the fabric and the metal itself. This super heats parts (most of the time down in the "Y" of the exhaust where it meets the muffler on the bottom) of the exhaust too much basically and will weaken the metal, causing cracks and the like. Wrap em' tight, wrap em' right. the tighter the better, I put one end of the wrap in a vise on the work bench, and clamp the other end on my start on the header, and roll it up like a map starting all the way across the garage. leaning back the whole time to squeeze the water out of the wrap and get full contact. and change the wrap when it gets fuzzy white like mine is in the last picture, it soaks up moisture when it gets older, usually once a year or so. See I think it just confirmed that I will get ceramic coating instead. It seem like way too much work since you basically have to redo it almost every years. |

you can seal the wrap and have it last lots longer I hear. I dont take the chance and wait. But if your worried about the header cracks better buy the peace of mind with the ceramic. I'll see if I can find some better pictures of my buddies white bolt with the white ceramic coat on the headers. but this is pretty good.
really looks killer in person |

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/43/ 406885.jpg Not to hijack the thread but I'm running a reverse exhaust as well. Here's the deal, it gives lots of power on top but is a dog down low. Better suited to racing than conservative street riding. More over it is not as loud as stock. I'm switching to a drummer. I bought it on line so I,m not out much. |
