Why are there 2 welds on the sides of the XB frame, as opposed to just one solid piece? Is it to do with the gas in frame? Also are the welds not buffed down because it would weaken them? |

Yes they are where the bulkheads are in the tank and yes a proper weld is never ground down as it weakens it. |

The two spars connect in the back. Besides being necessary for ridgidity that back piece allows you to get at all the fuell in the right side of the frame. |

continuing with the frame.... how does the bike know when to turn on the reserve light? the bike has two spars that contain fuel, so there has to be a fuel line coming from each spar. the left spar is thicker than the right spar, so i was thinking that the bike runs off the left spar untill it has been soaked up, then the reserve light comes on and the bike then feeds off of the right spar.... my bike's cooling fan is being replaced so I took some shots.... looking at the frame to see where the fuel is fed, there is only one place attached, and that at the back-bottom left of the frame. with that in mind, it seems as if there are not two different 'tubs' of fuel within the fuel cell, its all together. the real question is how does the bike know when to trip on the reserve light, but i took all these picks and cant let them go to waste... replacing my fan, its super dead
a picture of the rear part of the frame
so this whole basin in the back holds fuel
i had thought before that all the fuel was in the neck and the two spars with separate feed lines to each spar, one side(left) is gas the other is the reserve.. wrong! red shows offest, yellow thickness, black engine head

I figured it was on the right side since on a long left sweeper my light came on and went off on the straight. |

Wait until the first time you get on the brakes hard enough to shift the fuel forward enough to starve the fuel pump! I did that at Road America going into turn 1. I leaned it into the apex and went to roll on the gas and nobody was home! Then all of a sudden the fuel dropped back and BANG she lit back up. That made for a near highside at a rather high rate of speed. Not exactly my idea of a good time! Schmitty |
