Hi all, new here, having lurked for a while.Something about any group that would have me as a member...I know i should be posting this in the knowledge vault, but things get watered down there, what with someones s3/m1, blast did. I've given Al at American Sport Bike the short story, and while I trust his judgement to no end, he didn't give me the answer I wanted. Here's the long story: 2003 xb9s, 80 degree day. Going to pass 2 slow cagers, hit wot, one pulls in front of me. Chop throttle to 0. cager pulls back in, I'm back on gas, bike is sputtering. Check engine light comes on. 1/4 mi later fuel gauge comes on. Fresh tank of gas 1/2mi later. Limped home on one cylinder. Next morning bike runs fine, history code 23 Front injector. Run bike for 20 mins, up down road finally starts to act up, current code 23, front injector. Next day, cool bike runs fine, hardware store to get some in tank injector cleaner, and spray in cleaner. way home from store, bike starts to cough. A little spray in cleaner and bike runs better, but not 100%. Day 3 cool bike runs fine, warm up runs rough. Al is 95% sure I'm looking at a chaffed wire. I cannot find it. The bike runs fine until its warm. It intermitently runs well, seemingly dependent on a constant 4500k throttle input. Once it is running poorly, jiggleing wires dosn't make it better. When its running well jiggling wires dosn't make it run bad. My directlink hardware is shot, and I'm going to get ecm spy. At the moment I'm lost! Any thoughts? |

Something about this is reminding me of the under seat wire problem. When you put weight on it, there's problems. You sit back no problem, slide forward braking, problems. Look under seat on bottom of wires against frame. |

That was Als answer. Problem is, running it in the driveway with no seat it starts and runs fine, once it warms up, check engine light, code 23. |

I agree with Al, it sounds like a bad wire. Thermal expansion when it heats up is causing a flaky connection to fail. Hard part if figuring out where. |

i had the snakepit wire plugs filled with engine oil and cause all kinds of electrical wierdness.cleaned them out and all is back to perfection. scott |

Follow the harness off the ECM to the Compression fitting on your shock fluid line. The compression fitting has a sharp edge and will cut the underside of the harness. (you wont see it unless you move your harness around) If thats not it, remove the entire airbox and look at the harness going to the injectors. Follow them back to the harness "gang." They might be positioned to high vibrating against the cross bracket. Those would be the first two places i would look. If no luck, check for continuity with a DVOM with wiggle testing the harness. |

The service manual was the first thing I got. I'm a good mechanic, but a terrible trouble shooter. Following the flow chart it looks like I'd have to rotate the engine to get access to the throttle body. If thats the case, I'd want parts on hand. Sooo.. that said, looks like I'm cutting up the wiring harness this weekend to look for a short. One last thought, would a weak battery cause this situation? |

Whoa, wrong page, go to section 4, fuel and electrics. For code 23, you should just be looking at checking wires with multimeter at the beginning. |
