On my 40m ride home from work today I realized about half way home my engine light was on. I take it easy the rest of the way. I get to the light at the off ramp, everything sounds, feels and smells fine. I notice the fan isn't on. I get it home, throw in on the Spy and sure as hell I get TC 36. Fan short to ground or open. I looked in the book on how to get it out and it seems pretty easy. I'm thinking without even digging into yet that I may have a chaffed wire in one of three location possibly. ECM, connection to fan harness or the fan harness itself. Just sucks because I just bought $80 in bling for it. I hope the fan isn't shot. Start digging in the garage everyone. If you have a spare I may need to cough up some dough. Anyone have the honor of tackling this beast yet? |

My fan burnt out one winter. It's pretty easy to replace. Chasing chaffed wires on the other hand, not so much. |

Ask in the Big, Bad and Dirty forum about fans. I had the same thing happen to me last summer on my Firebolt, only mine was stuck on constantly. The chafe was at the left side where the wiring harness runs past the rear jug cooling fins. A piece of heatshrink tubing and a well-placed ziptie and all was well. |

I had the fan wire on my "03 XB 9 ground out intermittently. Drove me nuts until I found it. The sharp edge of the machined rear cylinder head rubbed it raw and would occasionally pop the fuse. |

I have not had a problem with my fan but in-regards to wiring.... I had another problem on my Uly which lead me to checking out my wiring harness throughout the bike. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/143909.html?1241116841 I would recommend everyone to go through the whole bike and check for any chaffed wires and re-route and tie-back the harness with tie-wraps. Also, I would apply dielectric grease on all the connectors, plugs wires and coil. It's time consuming but it gave me a piece of mind. |

I'm leaving work in about 10 min. Heading straight to the house to tear the bike apart. I'm hoping it is just a chaffed wire. And hell, while I have the bike torn apart I might as well check all wiring points... |

I found a blown fuse. I ripped the bike apart tonight to check for any chaffed wires. The connection at the fan appears to be fine. I'm going to follow the lines to the front of the bike tomorrow night. If nothing is chaffed and every thing ohms out right, would a dead fan pop the fuse? |

It'll pop the fuse(if no wires are chaffed) if it seized or shorted internal. Kaveman |

Funny thing, mine stopped a few weeks ago, been kinda cool so I didn't notice it but it was pretty warm one day and -no fan- I have a few days till my isolator mount shows up, I guess I'll start looking too. |

Lv ss: if the warranty end date was really only a week ago, some places will still cover it. Try customer service and the warranty people. |

no, I have not found any chaffed wires yet. I am currently replacing my 2nd fan right now. I will test the "bad" fan directly to a 12v charge to see if it in fact the fan spools up. If the fan spins I have a problem with some wires. If the fan is dead, I have a bad fan asm. Shouldn't that eliminate the chaffed fire diagnosis? |

I would think so. I'm at that stage now. I've checked every exposed wire I could find. From the fan the wire harness runs into a think plastic sleeve that is attached to the inside wall of the tank. It then breaks out by the forks. I haven't seen anything chaffed. I have to test the fan now to see if it spins... |

Definitely the fan. I just hooked it up to a power supply. It wants to run but won't. Looks like I'll be down another week waiting on a fan... |

Don't waste time chasing chaffed wires. Just replace. It's much easier! |

My fan died after about a year, got it replaced under warranty. The RPMs started getting really erratic, sometimes barely turning. I'm on my 2nd one now, and the bearings are making a good bit of racket. ~SM |

Well, after a long hot (100*) ride into work I noticed the fan was on when I got off the hiway, I guess It just wasn't getting hot enough to trip it. Make sure its broke before you change it!!! |

It's shot... Just waiting on Bradbuell to send the one I bought from him. Nice things is wifey feels bad cause I can't ride. So...in the mean time I've also got new pegs, turn signals, sliders, spike bar end, bar end mirror, orange header wrap, new front and rear tires (hell of a deal on cyclegear.com on pirelli). So I'm being patient... |

I think my fan is about to take a crap as well. About 2 months ago, it started to sound like it was dieing, sluggish speed etc, then I got an engine light which was the same short, looked at all the wires, couldn't find anything rubbed through/pinched/torn etc, I replaced the fuse and the fan worked perfectly and sounded fine. Now, it's getting a death wine again... |

If you can find one, get it. It was truly very simple to get it out of the bike. I received an email this morning stating the fan should show up today. It been TWO WEEKS since I've been able to ride. I'm going nuts. |

Simple to get out? Don't you have to remove the rear shock to get to it? ~SM |

Yes...put a jack on the jack point of the exhaust. Lift it until the wheel barely comes off the ground. I put ratchet straps on the rear subframe suspended from the ceiling with them just taunt. I had my old man hold the ass end of the bike...I pulled the top bolt of the spring. Your rear will drop. I then put some tension on the ratchet strap so I wouldn't damage my brake line. Pull the bottom screw and rest it on the rear hugger. No need to completely disassemble the shock. Lather...rinse...and repeat when you install the new fan...I'll snap some picks when I get home. |
