On my way home from school (MMI) tonight, I noticed that my lights were getting dim every now and then. At first I thought it was my imagination, but upon further inspection, it was really happening. I was cruising down the highway at around 75 to 80 and it would dim (headlights and instruments) and then get brighter then dim again, over and over. It was not regular, just every so often. Anyway, I got to a stop light and it was fine. So I tried reving it up and it would dim at about 3k rpm maybe a little higher. When I got home, I took my seat off and checked what I could at midnight with no real light and everything looked good. I started her back up and tried the same test and nothing went wrong. Does anyone have any ideas, I am at a complete loss. Oh, by the way, the bike is running great, no loss of power or anything. I hope it isn't my charging system. Thanks in advance, Morgan | ||

Remove your battery connections and check them for corrosion, then tighten back down. Check your light wiring as well to make surer everything is hunky-dory. Always check the simple stuff first - 9 times out of 10 it's something simple and inexpensive. If they're fine then it does indeed sound like a charging problem. Don't get your panties in a snit, though, I'm using 'charging problem' in a vague sense, not in the 'you need to go buy a new alternator ASAP' sense. | ||

Both times the exact same thing happened on my HD it ended up being the voltage regulator. If it is & you dont get it checked out & replaced if needed, it can also cook your battery. | ||

Dyna is correct Those are the first signs of a bad regulator. Do all the tests in the book, check for a good ground. Basic I&R | ||

Sounds like the regulator, but first: Check the fuses and diodes in the black box under the seat. Make sure they are pushed in snug(ly). Some people have had problems with the fuses and/or diodes coming partially or fully loose. A simple solution is to put some cardboard under the lid of the fuse box to prevent movement. Good luck. Thanks for the info, I checked the fuses and diodes and pushed them all in (couldn't tell if they were loose or not). Where is the voltage regulator and will the HD-Tech pic that up if it is bad. Because I am at MMI, I have access to all of the cool computer stuff for free. Also, if it is the voltage regulator will the problem continue every time I run the bike, or will it be intermitent? As you all can probably tell, I don't know much about electrical systems on bikes. I haven't made it to that clinic yet. One last question, how long should a regulator last? I have about 13,200 miles on my bike. It is still under extended warranty, but if the fix will cost me less than 50 bucks, then I will do it myself. Duh, I actually did know where the regulator was, I just forgot. I looked it up in my manual and remember talking about them in Theory. Sorry for the dumb question. I will check it's connections before I head to class. All of the other questions still stand. Also, how much does a new one cost? | ||

I dont know how much for the Buell but for my bike they were around $80-90. Pretty simple to replace too. Just make sure you get the wires good & tight & the ground is well grounded  | ||

There is an xb9 voltage regulator on ebay right now if that turns out to be your problem. |
