I watched both videos.

From the notes: fifteen minute trips in cooler weather is not good for the engine but you're in Texas so it's not going to be that cold. Still, she's gonna want you to treat her to a good, long and fast time.

My first thought, from this first video link, is dirty air filter, something is causing it to "choke".

From the second video, I'd go with the faulty Intake Air Sensor simply because, as I understand it, that's what controls the "choke" equivalent. My understanding is that O2 sensors kick in after the IAS sends the okay signal.

This is when the ECMspy and log become very handy.

Have your buddy or the dealer do the intake leak test. Spray some brake cleaner or WD-40 up under the frame on the right side. Angle the spray up toward the intake, but don't spray the air cleaner.

If there's a leak, engine tone/rpms will change when the spray enters the leak. It's an easy test and should take no longer than a minute to find out.

My guess is the TPS needs to be reset (or set in the first place).

He's had it at the dealer for weeks while they change plugs and replace his 'rusty' muffler... He hasn't recevied much help from the dealer under warranty.

He did the manual 08 tps reset with no success. I tried to check the intake sensor with ecm spy, but it won't read the eeprom correctly. It won't pull the error codes.

Perhaps we need to swap IAS just to see?

Well I answered on the other board and I will here too. His bike act really close to mine last fall. It started like this and got worst and worst to the point that it dropped to running only on one cylinder like in the second vid where the bike drop to about 500/600rpm and stayed there the front cylinder stayed cold. The dealer did many things that didn't really change anything but they agreed that something was wrong.

The one thing they had found when hooked to the computer is that my motor was running alot colder then it was supposed. They replaced the eng temp sensor but it didn't fix it so now they have replaced the ECM and I will find out if it really fixed it in 3 weeks when I get back home.

According to the tech it runs perfect now, he even let it sit outside in the cold part of the day before starting it and it worked fine not bad idling nothing.

Ok- Earwig and Rydberg, Keep in mind the bike even though it is a 2008 it still has a throttle position sensor and still needs to be calibrated.
Procedure is as follows (only on 08 and up)

Set run/stop switch to Run position

Turn ignition switch to On position

With the engine off, rotate the throttle grip from closed to wide open and back to closed position 3 times, holding the grip against each stop for 1 full second.

Cycle the key off and back on.
A properly calibrated TPS sensor will indicate 3.7 to 4.2 degrees.

Also, I have seen it before where a TPS will not hold and they then have to be replaced (I think its 70 bucks for a new one on a Buell).

One other thing that is kind of a left field guess here but, the dealer should check the fuel pump pressure. I have seen faulty fuel pumps do absolutely crazy things to the idle on a bike and car.

They did the TPS reset on my bike and it didn't do shit and like I said before his bike seem to act exactly like mine was.

I would try what Js_buell said about the engine temp sensor, I had a similar problem that I couldn't diagnose on an 01 X1 and thats what it turned out to be. It's definitely a lot cheaper than replacing the ecm.

X1, try what Boltrider was saying. Sounds like an air flow problem. Could be intake, CH gasket? Don't know what dealer you're going to, but I hear Central HD is better than Cowboy. Also they are sponsors of this site. If it is still covered under warranty, make them fix it.

Mine was running similarly and the AFV was high ('06 used ECMspy) after I finished installing all of my goodies from American Sport Bike. Called Al and here is a list of things he suggested I check:

-Intake leak. This turned out to be the problem on my bike. Also, he mentioned that it is bad news to use any carb cleaner on these bikes to check for this. The intake seals are a lubricated seal and allow for independent movement of the cylinders and intake as the engine warms (expands) and cools (contracts). Instead, he suggested going the route of the service manual and using propane to check this. I found this very difficult to even notice a change in idle, let alone pinpoint any leaks, as rough as it was idling. Another note on this is to check the nipple on the left side of the throttle body where the California Canister plugs in. If it is not a Cali bike this nipple should be plugged with a vacuum cap. The factory caps are well known for deteriorating and falling off.

-Bad fuel pump or pressure regulator. Apparently Buell uses a specialty fuel hose connector that would not be worth my time or money to try to buy. For this reason he suggested letting the dealer check this. It should, on an '07 and older bike, and I'm going to assume '08+ be at about 49 psi.

-Clogged injector. For this he suggested soaking the tip of the injector in some carb cleaner and trying it again.

-Head temp sensor. Already mentioned.

-Unlikely but possible is a leaky exhaust gasket on the rear cylinder. This would give false readings for the O2 sensor, in turn, telling the ECM the bike was running lean.

As stated earlier, being an '08 it should still be under warranty. If the local shop can't figure it out it might be worth taking it to the next closest one. Good luck with it and keep us updated.

Coil or plug wire may cause a cut off it sounds like an electrical problem as I hear a pop as it stutters it's hard to tell from the audio but it looks fixable for sure

keep in mind it only acts like this when it's cold in the morning. Seems like it's only when the cold enrichment is working.

More like it's continuing to work when it should have already shut off. Also, the note part sounds like it randomly comes on while riding.

what mods. have you made? My '04 did that very thing and it wound up being the breather lines.

Mine did the EXACT same thing this weekend.

I was going out for a ride so I decided to wash it. Since it rained the day before.

Apparently I got water in my air filter. Has he rode in the rain or washed his bike recently?

My 2008 XB12X has been having the same problems. I just got back from the dealer and this is what they said:

"Tech found AVF was reading 86%. In our region we should see approx. 100-110%. Tech reset valve and the bike did run better. This is just a symptom though. Tech found upon further diag. that fuel pressure was 50psi. Did not find any leaking injectors or intake leaks. Compression is slightly low but tech wants to speak with factory before tear down. After test ride the AFV dropped back down to 90%. Issue still seems present. Need customer to come back after we speak with tech services/factory."

So Tuesday afternoon I'll be talking to them to see what happens next. I don't know if that helps with your situation or not, but since the bike seems to be doing the same thing, I thought I'd share.

Hey I just found my crank position sensor wire touching the exhaust clamp. It had to come that way. It melted to the wire,bike was running kinda of ok, but now it's sweet. Anyone heard of a recall? Thanks
