when i got my first Buell, I thought it was cool to ride in a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. after being rear-ended by a car I'll never ride without at least a jacket and good denim jeans...at least. dont forget the helmet. the morning of my wreck it was a little cool so i had on my jacket. it and my helment save me from alot of road rash and probly saved my life. i only had some rash on my legs where my jeans failed to provided adequate protection. always wear your gear, i dont care how hot it is, how uncool you look, or how short your ride is. your gear will save your life!!!

I high sided and landed on my noggin and sommersaulted only to land on my back and slide feet first down the road. I slid right into a ditch that was about 7 feet deep.

Gear that saved me was, obviously, helmet. I landed on my face and it had about 4 mm gouges. Skin and bone on my face would have been less resillient.

Jacket saved my back skin while Ralph Lauren jeans didn't do the same for my but and legs,

Boots helped. I still managed to break an ankle and severely sprain the other but if I were wearing tennis runners I would have probably lost them in the sommersault unless they were super uncomfortably tight. Which they would'nt have been since I'm in the habit of always keeping tennis runners loosely tied so I can just slip them on.

I was hit from behind while on the freeway by someone doing approximately 80mph. Broke my left tibia and fibula, severely dislocated my right knee tearing almost every ligament, pulled my right hamstring off the bone, pulled the growth plate off my right fibula, flipped the cartilage upside down, broke my right pelvis, fractured my right radius and ulna, broke both collar bones, broke off part of my L2 vertebra, jammed the index and middle fingers of my left hand(missing cartilage from the second joint of my middle finger, looks kinda like I'm giving everyone the bird), and when I went through the guardrail, it almost cut off my left arm below the elbow. I also got road rash down into my left tibia. I have about half a pound of titanium in me now.

I was wearing an AGV Demon helmet, which was worn down into the kevlar on the right side, dished in on the left side from the concrete post I hit, and was missing a chunk out of the chin bar.

I had on a Buell jacket (the gray and black textile one). It didn't have back armor, which might have protected my L2, but the elbow armor saved my arm.

My gloves weren't armored, and I wish they had been. All my gloves now have some type of armor.

I now wear motocross knee/shin armor and armored boots.

Oh, forgot to mention the nine surgeries I've had since. Last one was pelvic surgery last November. Hope that's the last.

3 Jan '08 I was riding home from work on a two-lane road going 35 mph. A Nissan Armada was traveling the opposite direction and turned left directly in front of me. Impact point was right rear wheel well, and it actually broke the wheel off of his rear suspension.

The bad news: I suffered a broken tib/fib (compound) just above ankle on right leg, fractured pelvis, fractured right wrist, crushed left humerous (five pieces), and fractured glenoid and scapula (left shoulder). Four surgeries, a year of recovery and $500,000 in medical expenses later I have titanium in my leg and arm, and on-going swelling and discomfort.

The good news: I was wearing full protection and am alive because of it. My Arai Signet GT-R did it's job- I did not even lose consciousness. I was wearing Alpinestar GPS boots, and the surgeon said they are the reason I still have a right foot. Because of full-coverage leather I did not have any rash- not so much as a scratch. The guy who hit me (says he did not see me) had full insurance, and the ins company settled for the maximum amount of the policy (seven figures). I have health insurance so my medical bills were covered.

In the end, because I was prepared this situation turned out as best as it could... although I wouldn't even wish it on an enemy. I was less than a mile from home, and did absolutely nothing wrong. Two accident reconstruction experts concluded that I had less than two seconds to react, and there was nothing I could have done to avoid hitting the SUV. This is the exact type of accident that no one can prepare for other than wearing all of the protective equipment every time you get on your bike.

OK, I was replacing a wax gasket on the toilet and needed a new supply line. Hardware store is 1.5 mi away. I took the time to wear my heavy leather jacket, Arai helmet, heavy riding gloves and stout work boots on a hot assed day. Warmed up my Lightning and blasted to the Ace Hardware store. I was feeling pretty good about almost being done with my honey-do list and was wringing out the bike a bit and saw the speedo sweep past 80 when a large dog shot out from behind shrubs. The dog was at a full run and the timing was perfect. No time to react. I hit the dog dead center and cut it in half. The bike shot me over the top and went flipping down the road. I hit the street head first and was tumbling badly. I tried to extend my arms and legs so that I would slide rather than tumble but no luck. I finally came to a stop, got up and paced the distance back to the impact with the poor dog. 186 feet. I picked up parts of my bike on the way. I was able to bend the shifter out enough to work and she started and I rode it back to the house.
Injuries were a broken left thumb from when the left side of the handlebar broke off and road rash on my left knee. (too bad I didn't wear my leather pants).
Safety equipment used up was the helmet (at least one severe impact and lots of scrapes), a hole worn through the shoulder of the jacket and a hole worn through one glove and one boot.

Now if I had not had that gear on, even for a 1.5 mile ride....

After reading this I am going to go buy riding boots. I've been riding in my tennis shoes because my "Hiking Boots" from Kohls were scratching my paint on the clutch side every time I shifted.

Like I said, going to get boots this effing weekend.

I lost the front tire coming out of the chicane at Sears Point. Slid for about ten feet then I saw sky, ground over and over again. I finally came to rest off the track and got up and walked away. Bike wasn't so luck...Two piece leather suit, Good boots, Back protector, Good gloves. I didn't even put a scratch on my helmet... I always Ride in my gear, Street or track and I don't care how HOT it gets!!!!! Ride fast Ride safe.

The two times I have been down on the street, I have been wearing atleast a riding jacket, helmet, and riding gloves. The first time I went down, I was going turning at an intersection on my little 250 ninja, and just gave it too much rear brake and had the back-end slide out from under me. I tore up my knee pretty good. Pants I was wearing didnt last long against the blacktop. Had roadrash for a good month or more, and I still cant bend that leg all the way when I crouch.

The 2nd accident I had, was a little more dramatic, and recent. Was on my Buell, going through a decent left-hander that was pretty blind. As I dip my bike into the corner, I see a guy on a cruiser with his rear brake locked up, sliding right into my path. I got hard on my front brakes, straightened the bike up, and managed to miss him by mere inches. Bad thing was I was on my front brakes so hard, the back-end came off the ground. WHen I sat it back down, it was no longer lined up with the front, and the bike did a mini tank slapper, then slammed me down on my right side at about 15mph. Only injuries were a small ding on my knee that healed up rather quickly, and a huge bruise on my hip. Took my hip a good month to heal up. If I hadnt been wearing my armored riding jacket though, it would have been ALOT worse.

I lowsided my XB last fall. I was wearing leathers, gloves, boots, helmet. Not a scratch on me. EVERY single piece of gear hit the pavement and had rash. But not a single scratch on my body.

I won't wear anything other than full gear. It's just not worth the risk.

"always wear your gear, i dont care how hot it is, how uncool you look, or how short your ride is. your gear will save your life!!!"

I have a 20 year old son and this will be his second summer riding a street bike, an SV650S. Coming from a mom and telling him the importance of ATGATT, he just looks at me with THAT look. I just hope he doesn't have to experience going down to realize just how important this is.

When I totaled my Blast back in December I was wearing a Shoei helmet, jacket and boots. I came off the bike high side and slid face first across the pavement for about 20 feet. The helmet was scraped and had a good chuck out of it. No road rash on my torso at at all. I was wearing jeans so both my knees got chewed up pretty good and since I didn't have gloves, the back of my left had had some serious rash.

The ER doctor told me the helmet saved my life.

Here are some pictures. For reference, I was going about 30 mph when I went down.

Page one is from my accident. Page two is when my 14 year old son just tipped over because he was going too slow in a turn.

I saw that image just yesterday and thank god I pulled my @ss out of it. It was one of those days where it was too nice to wear a jacket. I typically wear it. Reading what is above is eye opening. Glad all you guys made it through and still ride...

I've highsided before at about 20mph wearing full gear. Took my hands off the bars to stretch my hands, hit a grove and smacked the asphault in the blink of an eye.
