In my haste to get out for a ride, I was in a big rush and put the battery charger on the wrong terminals... The fan came on for a couple of seconds and then everything went dead. I checked the battery and it is taking charge. I checked the fuses and the ignition one was blown, but the rest were ok. Even after I changed the ignition one there was nothing... I spoke to a service guy at the dealer and he suggested it might be either a blown voltage regulator or a cooked ECM. I had been thinking about getting a new Race ECM anyways... Thoughts??? I am riding a '04 Firebolt XB9... Thanks... |

Total naive answer here but what about the diode in the fuse box. It's supposed to direct current one way. I wouldn't know offhand if it's on the circuit you hit or if that voltage would do damage. However, that's free to check. |

I did the same thing to my bike about a half a year ago and had the exact same symptoms as you have. I had to replace one or two of the relays (located on the opposite side as the fuse box). Once I did that, everything was back to normal. Hope that fixes your problem. |

I'm not looking at the wiring diagram but I doubt very seriously that you did blew the diode or fried the ECM. A fried voltage regulator probably wouldn’t cause the problems you describe. The relays are delicate, have a diode in them, and are not polarity protected. I would check them out first. Was the ignition key on when you connected the battery charger? |

There is a main fuse (maxi fuse) under the seat beside the battery. That should go before the regulator. Be worth checking. |

Scratch the main fuse idea. It wouldn't stop you starting. Can't think of anything beyond those mentioned. Hope you get it sorted quickly. Maybe ask an auto electrician. |

I checked the maxi fuse, that's ok. I did have the key on (or turned it on during, I can't exactly remember). I checked the diodes for continuity, and there was the same continuity in all of them but I don't know what is supposed to have continuity and what is now... I will go to the harley place today and see if they have those... |

Update! I think the diodes are what did it... I dropped in to my local harley dealer (there is no real buell dealer here yet), and when speaking to one of the service guys, he pulled the cover off the diode and it was burnt up... So I have a few on order. Thanks for the help all... |

Whew, glad when I did that, the battery was off the bike! ~SM |

I did the same, except I jumped the bike with a brand new battery. Fan came on just like you said. Two burnt up relays, and the same fuses you found. Replaced the relays and fuses...good as new! |
