I bought my 03 XB9S in January. I am on break for Easter and took off my airbox cover and I looked down the air scoop and saw that the previous owner had closed off the air coming into the scoop with a piece of plexy glass. The previous owner also cut two vents into my airbox cover. He also took the snorkel out. Why would he have closed off the air to the air scoop with that plexy glass piece? If I took it out, would I have to remap my ecm? What should I do? |

Did he perform a breather reroute? Check for an air filter on the side of the bike somewhere. (Message edited by j0hn0tt0 on April 10, 2009) |

I would Def. take out that plexi unless he is a better engineer than the people who produced the bike.I would say thats gonna be bad on the motor even with other vents. |

maybe he was trying to make it like the 06+ bikes? |

Does the airbox cover (outside color panel) have a vent grill above the gas cap? If so that is from an '06 or newer bike. For what ever reason they were trying to get air from up there. But it won't hurt either way, or both. |

Sounds to me like he tried to make it like an 06+ XB. |

The later models (06+) route all of the air from the LH scoop to the back cylinder. The earlier models divided it between air intake and cooling. The hole in the frame is closed off on the later model and the space is used for increased fuel capacity. The "tank" on the later models is an air intake for the airbox. It looks to me like yours has just been modernised. It should be fine IMO. |

For God's sake, YES! More pictures! I want to see the rest of the bike! I think the mods are fine. Looks like the plexiglass mod was to direct all the air in the scoop to the rear cylinder for better cooling. Then the outer air box was modified to get air into the engine. Similar to the '06 and up models. |

Hi Folks, I am a friend of Tf1182. We have the same year bike. I have had mine since new and he just bought his. I rode his bike the other day and it felt kind of boggie and flat. We have similar mods but he has the full Micron system and I have the D & D slip on. Any ideas why his bike doesn't seem to have the get up and go that it should? |

Has he tuned his bike to give it more fuel? His fueling sounds like it's way off. He needs ECMSpy or something of that nature. |

Agreed. I don't know what tuning the Micron exhaust requires, but with the addition of the open air box, blocked snorkel, and modified outer air box some custom tuning is certainly called for. EDIT: I'm also wondering what that electronics bundle is behind the air cleaner. (Message edited by SIFO on April 12, 2009) |

The electronics bundle behind the air cleaner is my Lo-Jack security system. |

The Micron system that Tf1182 has is one of the best power producing exhausts ever made for the XB line. However, a new fuel map is needed to get the bike to reach its potential. |

When I fitted my Micron I rode it around for a couple of days before I loaded the new map. It was grey and dull. Put the map in and it was crisp and sharp. No other system can match it across the rev range, although the D&D is supposed to run well in the midrange. |

I guess he would have to ask the previous owner what has been done. Why wouldn't he have just left the hole in the frame open? Fear of too much air maybe? Why wouldn't a simple tps reset do the trick? When I did my K&N and D&D a tps reset was all it needed. His bike is not crisp or sharp. Are there any North Central Mass. tuners that could help him figure out what is going on? |

++1 on more pictures...really nice looking color. I want one of those inner airbox redux pieces holding your air filter on...very nice looking piece, nice looking bike period. I do think that that extra filter and the lo-jack in the airbox might be dirtying up the airflow a bit but not enough to make the bike run badly. A remap is definitely called for, contact Al at American Sport Bike. -d |
