Has there been any major changes to the wiring on the XBs over the last few years? Color codes changed, etc? Particularly in the lighting systems? In other words, if I buy a service manual for an '03, will the electrical be about the same for the other years too? Just wondering and trying to save a buck. |

I am no expert but I think the only changes/ updates would be with the newer belt setup and the exhaust valve on the 12 .. and some other minor stuff but I would think the rest would be the similar |

I'm really only concerned with the wiring at this point. |

The XB9s has a 5 volt speedo sensor feed, the XB9r has a 12 volt lead. No idea where the 12's fall, I hope they are all 5 volt. So there is at least one change somewhere. |

that's interesting... I suppose we'll never know why. |

looks to me like it is a difference between S and R not 9 and 12..I have the 04S book and says 5 volt ... |

Thru the years? They have only been built for 2 years now, I dont think there would be any changes besides what spyder mentions. |

The 2003 XB9R has a 12v speed sensor reference. The 2003 and later XB9S, and all XB 12 models have 5v Speed sensor reference. There is a kit available to change the 2003 XB9R models over to 5v reference which helps extend speed sensor durability. ALL 2004 XB models have 5v speed sensor reference. All the color codes for wiring are the same across all models all years. Some of the 2004 XB models use different fuse sizes (mid year change) on the R and S models. If my memory serves me, those are the only changes to wiring with respect to wire colors and circuits. |

excellent info guys... (sorry about the "through the years" comment... I poorly worded what I was asking... I meant to imply wire color codes through the years... my bad) |

Now you want me to actually remember something? Sheeesh Y0199.K Also there is an extra lead going to the ECM on 12 models with active muffler control. |

Dr scum...you want a fun job try some of the wiring on a HD. When I rebuilt mine last year there is a bundle of wires going thru the backbone of the frame thats almost as big around as your wrist & 90% of them are red wires!!! Real fun tracing those. |

I hear you... I do quite a bit of H-D wiring. The newer bikes have nicer connectors, but the older ones had less wires |

Great work factory! All new XB's are 5v. Henrik... email me a mailing address. My address is in my profile. |

I imagine there are inadvertant/accidental changes to random bikes coming out of the factory too, my 03 9R (US model) being one example. The headlight low beam was not wired according to spec. and took me some sorting out of the main harness using the service manual to identify the mis-wire and correct it. Note: the SM shows wire harness differences between US & export models, so I can see how such mishaps could occur. |
