My 05 xb9sx with 30,000 miles has developed a smoking problem at start up. However it seems to smoke much more if the bike has been running then started within 5 minutes of being run. It doesn't seem to smoke while running unless i whack open the throttle under load. It seems odd to me that it would smoke more after only sitting for a few seconds or minutes than after sitting all night. |

Black smoke = fuel. White smoke = oil. Just a rough rule. |

Valve guides tend to smoke more at idle and part throttle because of the vacuum created by the throttle being closed and literally sucking oil past the intake valve guides. (Message edited by saratoga on April 06, 2009) |

Its definitely white smoke and it stinks of burning oil all the time whether it is smoking or not. |
