I removed my belt guards, and yes I know they are there for a reason, but have since noticed a bit of wear on the flat side of the belt, more like a light consistent scuff (can still see the pn). My question is whether you have this scuff as well, and to what extent are your guards removed. I like the look w/out and wanted to know what parts are normally left or what is necessary. I know rocks and debris could always be an issue, but just don't want the bike beating on itself. Thanks |

Your scuff is more than likely the friction between the belt and the idler wheel. I have a modded pulley on mine and have noticed this same thing. Not saying you have a modded pulley. Just that the pulley I have has a surface area that that is just a little 'off' and it lines up perfectly with the scuff mark on my belt. |

My belt is worn on the outer edge to the point you can just see some cords, but my guards are still in place. That, and it seems to have worn to a point and stopped... been like this for as long as I can remember (2006 model, original belt). I'm not particularly concerned. ~SM |

Ditto SM. My '07 belt was frayed new on the outside edge, looks like kevlar fuzz. Doesn't look much worse now at 17k mi. ; however, I will probably replace it this season. I think there is a new belt design now for the '08-'09, and it fits our bikes (? '04-'07?). |

New belts often come like that. The cords show on about half the belt. Perhaps they're trimmed to align them after manufacture. I've had a stone hole a belt, and I had the guards on. It looks to me that if a stone gets into the guard it has nowhere to go but around the pulley. With no guards there is more chance of a stone, but more chance it will fall off the belt. I've wondered about something that runs vertically behind the pulley and then has like a wedge sitting just above the belt to push stones away. |

Thanks guys, the info is reassuring, so I I was checking out the rub mark source more closely and did just notice that my belt has multiple cracks both in the center and on the edge. It is an '03 but has 12k on the orig belt. Glad I took a closer look, I think the rub is from the idler; cracks...who knows (time, rocks). Time for a new belt, can I just buy an '04 belt and put it on, or do I have to use '03? |

I have an '03 that I bought in 07. About a month later the belt snapped while a co-worker was riding it. Anyway, the belts were upgraded in 06 (I think) so the new belt is better than the old one and it fits fine. |

Check that: A17082 - XB Series 03-to-04 Belt Conversion Kit 03 XB series use an 11mm tooth pitch Gates belt that has proven to be fragile, requiring extensive guards and complicated rear wheel removal procedures. The 2004+ belt drive system uses a 14mm tooth pitch Goodyear belt that is much stronger, and this kit now includes the 2008 version of the belt, which is even stronger yet. All components (belts, pulleys, ALL guards) must be swapped. This kit includes the belt, idler pulley w/bracket, front pulley, and a rear diamond highlight pulley that is a cosmetic upgrade over the plain black pulley. Chrome mounting bolts are shown, but they have been discontinued by Buell so the OEM pulley bolts and washers are supplied instead. This kit does NOT include the new taller 2004+ rear brake master cylinder. 2004 and later Buells use a rear brake master cylinder that is 1/2" taller for additional belt clearance. We have not noted an interference problem on our 2003 Buell with this kit, but heavier riders may want to install an 2004 rear master cylinder for greater clearance.
