Ok so my buddies buell runs like crap. We put a jardine race can on it and a high flow, buell race plugs and fresh oil. at first it wouldnt idle correct, like not at all actually, so i turned up the idle screw and did a TPS reset. Still runs like crap. ecmspy reads a 02 sensor lean code. So i was just wondering if i should add 1 too all of his values, maybe to add more fuel so it would run a little richer, or just leave them alone and try and find a fuel map for it. Im not so into tuning every value on the map, im just trying to get it to run right. any suggestions (Message edited by 03firebolt on April 05, 2009) |

Did you happen to stuff a rag in the intake and forget to remove it? |

I have never done it myself, so perhaps some expert can chime in. I am not sure what you mean by "turned up the idle screw" but I think you are supposed to unscrew the idle screw so that the throttle butterfly is fully closed before doing a TPS reset. TPS means throttle position setting, and the setting one checks for is fully closed. I think Anybody out there who really knows how to do it? |

What year is the bike? When you open the muffler and intake usually you would put in a race ECM, at least on the '06 and earlier bikes. There just won't be enough fuel. |

Did you give it a chance, a long ride, to let the ECM "learn" the changes? |

The bike is an 03, And i was just wondering if it would be sufficiaint to just add one to every level on the map. That way it increases the fuel by a hair. Therefore it shouldnt run lean anymore. I dont know? Im not even close to pro at tuning, but that theory does make sense to someone else right? And yes, The bike was written for about 30 miles after the changes, The check engine light would come on about every two min, stay on for a min, then go back off and repeat. |

If your check engine light is coming on, you got bigger issues. Use ECMspy to see if the codes stored in the ECM |

I assume the bike ran well before the new can. You didn't mention any changes to the ECM so a TPS reset should not have been necessary, but if it was done correctly it won't hurt anything. From what I've heard the Jardine can works better with the race ECM than the stock one. You might try loading the race fuel and timing maps into the ECM. Neither map was designed for the Jardine though so a better option might be a map from American Sport Bike or Xopti. On my '06 I did a Jardine can, K&N filter, carved up the air box, breather reroute, and loaded the race ECM maps all at one time. It ran better than stock, but some tuning with Megalog Viewer and ECMspy got it much better. It never threw any trouble codes though. Just a thought, but did you use any anti-seize on the plug threads? If so was it O2 sensor safe? Edit: Also what is the AFV adjusting to after it's been ridden? Ill have to check the AFV whenever my buddy comes back over. The code that is tripping is 02 sensor Lean code. Thats why i thought increasing the fuel would do the trick, but i havent tried it. No anti sieze on the plugs. Ive burnt up 02 sensors in cars using that, so i tend to stay away from it. Im gonna try and find the race ECM map, But i need it for an 03 xb9r all i can find is the later years. Any suggestions? EDIT: Im trying to save as much money as i can. Professional made maps are expensive for a reason i Guess. (Message edited by 03firebolt on April 05, 2009) |

See this current thread... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/449542.html?1238965281 I'm sure a PM will get you what you need. Should be the same as the 03 xb9s. I'm not going to make any claims of being all that knowledgeable on the ECM / O2 sensor thing, but I spent a lot of time reading everything I could on the subject and don't recall anyone getting a O2 sensor lean code from changing to a slip on muffler. Of course just because I'm not aware of it does not mean it can't happen. I'm still learning every day! You also might check for an intake leak by spraying the seals with WD-40 while idling. If the idle changes you have a leak. That would explain the poor idle and lean condition. If you can set things up to do some data logging that may shed some light on what's going on too. From there you only need Megalog Viewer and you can start building your own fuel maps. Then you will find out just how worth the $$$ those professionally done maps are! I've got mine worked out pretty well at this point, but still want to sort out a few minor issues this spring. My current mapping runs way better than stock ever was though. I'll never have the experience the professional tuners though. |

Yea, well i burned my laptop up last week, so right now im stuck with moving a spare desktop out to my garage, So datalogging is kind out of the question for now. Haha that would be a sight, carrying around the desktop, monitor, keyboard and mouse, all while attached to a couple thousand extension cords. |
