Lets say that I am looking at a bike with a broken triple tree? I would rather have a higher handlebar like the S. Is this a huge PITA or should I just stick with getting a new triple?

you'll need an adapter plate to keep the ignition key vertical. going R to S looks easier than the other way. or just upgrade to a set of heli-bars...
