How in the hell did you get 9 chain on?

I put one on and it was way tite. I could not get it off. I had to use bolt cutters to cut the chain to get it and the sprocket/clutch off.

Yes I swapped the front sprocket to the smaller 9 sprocket.

I put the 12 chain on and it is really floppy.

I have a second 9 chain and I cant seem to get the sprocket/clutch/chain on the bike b/c its so tite.

What am I doing wrong???

Any ideas?

As I recall, you have so slip both sprockets with the chain installed onto the shafts at the same time.

Yep. That is what I'm trying to do. Chain seems too tite.

The last one it took me a while I end up banging them on with a rubber mallet. Then I realized it was on super tight. I could not remove them, until I cut the chain w/ a bolt cutters.

No slack it was really tight was past adjustment spec.

I must be missing something here.

If we look at an existing primary drive, we see slack that must be taken up with the adjuster. The shafts are fixed. The chain is a given length- that's it!
The only thing it can be is the wrong chain/ sprocket combo. The 12 sprocket is bigger and requires a longer chain. Of course it follows that the 9 sprocket would need the shorter chain.
Are you trying to install a 9 chain on a 12 sprocket?

I just did the 9 swap a month ago or so and the parts slipped right on, no sweat. I was using used parts and I assume a new chain would have been a hair shorter but I can't see it being a deal breaker. The chain I used had 1700 miles on it. Broken in but not worn by any means.


I still feel like I'm missing something. Can you post pics?

Roger, 9 sprocket 9 chain.

first tite 9 chain was used 17k miles, new 9 chain is new.

I put my old 12 chain on and its really sloppy.

there is an adjuster on the bottom of inner primary.It is a large(7/8)I believe,with a stud sticking through it.
loosen the nut while holding the stud with an allen wrench.
back the stud off,should easily unscrew once large nut broke free.
assembly is reverse,set tension to manual spec,you will also have to reset the clutch throwout bearing freeplay.

Yall are talking about the chain adjuster in the outer primary case right?

I don't even have the primary cover on.

It's tight with out an adjuster on it.

As far as I know. Rear on 9/12 is the same.

If this helps, Im using the "rear gear" clutch shell from an XB9R.

YES.. All you change is the front gear and chain thats it..!

All else is the same for a 9 or the 12

Yes, 9 and 12 have the same rear sprocket. Barker, you sure you didn't get the chains and sprockets backwards? I.E.- 12 chain with the 9 sprocket or vice-versa? I'd say one of the parts HAS to be wrong- either the sprocket or the chain. Maybe they sold you a wrong part? There should be quite a bit of slack in the chain, which is taken up with the primary shoe after you get the cover on.

I see no adjuster and the chain appears slack. I don't know what's up with your chain Barker.

Barker, the primary hardware was (I think) changed for the 08 model year. Are you using the hardware that's appropriate for your model year?

Yes, I am using pre 08 hardware.

The hardware you are referring to it the front sprocket. 08+ does not use a nut on the sprocket. It use a retaining pin system.

XB9 sprocket has 34 teeth and the XB12 has 38 teeth.

Double check, like stated earlier it should work unless the hardware is not correct.

The sportster sprocket will bolt up to the stator rotor but will not work with the chain, it has a different tooth count. So, double check the count.

Dealer told me they would do the swap .. including new oil and gasket for $120 .... I already have the chain and sprocket. For that price I'm gonna leave it to the pro's ...

the facts:

The new 9 chain has this part# on the box 40005-57B. This is now my second 9 chain. The first one was used it was way too tite as well.

The chain adjuster shoe is in the outer case. Its that green thing on the right side of the cover. Right? Not even touching it.

i guess you can't just take 1 link outta the 12 chain... but that would not be solving the real issue: 'WHY DOESN'T IT FIT'

You have to take links out in pairs. If you take out a pair from the 12 chain it would be the same length as a 9 chain. So what you have in your picture.

The 9 pulley should have 34 teeth not 35. You can buy 3rd party pulleys with 35 teeth for H-D motors. I wonder if it is that, it would explain it.

I had a 42 tooth pulley made for my 12. I also had a 43 tooth made, but the chain wouldn't fit. Sounds a bit like your problem.
