I am here to confess that my cheapness is going to cost me about $165. I bought a set of Shinko 009's for my 04 XB12s. They were the right size and they were cheap. I needed tires NOW!!! Those tires are terrible. I am relatively new again rider and they seem to slide all over the place. Downshift and they slide. Looks like I may have to park the bike till I can save $$ to get a better set of tires. Aaarrghhh...live and learn I reckon. | ||

Did you break em in enough to get the mold release out of em? Have heard both good and bad(mileage) about them but havent heard of them sliding all over. | ||

my diablos rosso's slid like crazy...felt like my tires were made out of plastic...20-40 miles later i was hittin the clover leafs cuz damn those tires stick compared to the dunflops. | ||

Okay so maybe I should ride them longer? It just kinda freaked me out. They have been on there about 300 miles with little riding off the middle. I just don't want to drop another chunk of change on tires right now but...I don't want to slide off the road either. | ||

i always take a scrubby sponge and some simple green to mine before i mount them, they scrub in much quicker that way!!! | ||

Did you check your air pressure? Sometimes too much or too little can pucker you up in a hurry.  | ||

300 miles sounds like enough to me. I was runnin the edges after 100 miles on my 2ct's. Do some tires take a lot longer to break in? | ||

The experience I have with shinko is you get what you pay for. Put a set on the scoot (only one that made whitewalls in that size) they are hard as plastic, but after a few miles on the scoot (100ish) i can drop it down and corner at 20-25mph just like nobodys business | ||

when i break mine in, i put my bike on the rear stands and start it and put it in gear so the rear wheel is spinning, then i just take some steel wool and scrub from one side to the other, kind of a pain, but well worth it when i can get rid of the chickenstrip within the first five minuites on a new tire. I run the michilin pilots. They are excellent tires. I havent ever felt them slide, and ive touched the sidewall so i def can spend the extra moolah on them, i get reasonable milage out of them, about 4k out of the back, burnouts and wheelies of course, and about 8k on the front. | ||

expensive tires are expensive for a reason, unlike many other things in this world. I'm getting around 8k out of pirelli's well worth the $280 in my opinion when I hit the brakes and need it to stop. | ||

+1 03firebolt I do this on my go-kart before races, fresh rubber, I use 100 grit sand paper though. Never had the need to do it on my bike. | ||

Are you using mx downshift technique? I have that bad habit and slide through my shift. If it's because you've downshifted to first and you're still at about 10-15 mph, it's you not the tires. Refine that shifting and clutch work. | ||

wipe the tires down with a rag wetted liberally with a spray can of brake-clean ,it removes the mold release. Theres warning stickers for everything ...... but mold release lubricant on MC tires does not seem to qualify....should have a big red flag attached | ||

From the reviews I have read, the mold release on the Shinkos is especially pervasive. My understanding is also that the rubber and molds were purchased from Yokohama. You've got them on the bike. You might as well see if they get any better. If it's any consolation, I NEVER felt secure with the set of Pirelli Stradas I had on the ULY. They acted just like you describe. |
