I searched for this, thought Id ask anyway.
Do I need axle sliders? I commute and pleasure ride mostly. It looks to me that the case, pegs, and tank (pucks) would take the hit.

As the saying says, "Sh!t Happens"! Get some rear sliders for sure. You'll scratch your rear axle up if you go down, or there's a good possibility of doing so.

I would recommend getting some. I just tipped my bike over once in the garage and the bottom corner of my swing arm got all scuffed up.

If and when the "stuff" happens, they are worth their weight in gold.

But no you do not NEED axle sliders. If you NEEDED them, they would come on it from the factory.

Rear sliders are a good idea. They definitely saved my swingarm. I've noticed up front though that they never touch anything. Between my bar end sliders, frame pucks, and the width of the tire, I don't think there's any way for my front forks to make contact with the ground. Still, better safe than sorry, and it balances out the look if you use rear ones.

Take a piece of sting or some other straight edge and place it so as to form a line from the edge of the tire up along the bike. Move the upper part of the string along the bike and you will see what will make contact with the ground in the case of a spill. Do this again while maintaining a little distance where an axel slider would be. Very educational!

Yes. I touched down all 4 of my Dark Horse Moto swingarm and fork sliders in one wreck.

...looks like the big slider attached to your head got some use, too!

I agree - worth the investment. Both my XB9R and XB12XT are sporting the Dark Horse Moto sliders front and rear.

They call them 'accidents' for a reason.

A MUST HAVE ITEM!

Sliders and frame pucks are the FIRST mod/upgrade that should be done to any Buell or bike for that matter!

pay fractions now....or pay big $$ down the road! (swingarm, forks)

I hope no one ever needs to put there sliders to use, but this is real world riding! And i'd rather have them ready and waiting to take a beating, then not have them and give that beating to my forks or swingarm!

If you ask me, Buell should contract Dark Horse Moto! There sliders should be on every bike from the factory :-)

just my thoughts...

ok Im sold. Modify the question a bit.
I see Froggy (your pics need to be on their website)had the rear ones with the stand spools which push them out further.

Do the ($35) lesser ones that do not stick out as far protect well enough?

I have the Econo Sliders on my XB9S.
They worked great when i went down at the track.
They stick out more than enough to keep the swing arm from touching.

The handlebars and shifter were damaged in the wreck but those are cheap parts to replace.
I bet if I had the handle bar sliders they would have saved my bars.
My friend went down on his 12R that same day and his bar sliders saved his handlebars.

On the other hand.................

The Official Cheapskate approved slider is a skateboard wheel and some homemade axles.

I have not crash tested mine, but my nephew Ben who races and knows everything has, says they work fine.

The also present some decorative possibilities that the conventional sliders do not.

I tend to favour the Ricta Chrystal sliders to match the accent color on the bike, but that's just me.

The eco sliders from Dark horse are a SWEET deal! You can't beat the price! and they will handle a laydown just as good as any other.

Gent Jim, nice pix. Good thing your sprocket has all those holes, so that the homemade axle will fit through.

Here's another vote for Dark Horse Moto sliders. I love mine. They are worth their weight in gold. Saved my bike from any swingarm and fork damage when I low sided.

You don't "need" axle sliders, until you fall, so when you are in mid air, hit PAUSE, go and order them, receive them, install them and then hit the hard coarse pavement with full force. It's like airbags in cars, you don't need them, until your whole life flashes in front of your eyes in a split-second ; )

If you could see how many emails we get that say something like "I've been thinking about getting sliders but never got around to it. Then, yesterday, I low sided and damaged my swing arm..." Sliders really are cheap insurance.

Yes you NEEED sliders. I used three in one crash & still got the front wheel. I think my bike is on the Dark Horse Moto homepage as a test unit. (red firebolt). Dark Horse Motos look good & work like they're supposed to & he'll treat you right.--CR

I'll have to go to Youtube and see if I can find the Jose Jimenez interview where he's an "Astronaut." The reporter asks him if that's a crash helmet he's holding and he says: "I HOPE not!"

(edit) found it - audio only... about 1:26 into the routine

Look at crashed buells and notice the swingarms always appear to get rash.
