Is there anyone using anything different than regular HD batteries? Any light weight options, or newer technology that doesn't have any memory effect on the battery?

Speed Cell.
But it's like $250.
I need a new batt but will be replacing with a stock (not sure of the price but I'm well aware of what HD stands for) or stock spec AGM from Interstate. $95

I got the speed cell, it it schweet. $250 is worth it, it weighs only 2lbs, and it less than half the size of the stocker.

Panhead, the HD battery is $100.

I'm drooling over that SpeedCell Battery.
So many goodies, so little money...

I can't help but wonder how long it will last.
I've used an Orbital battery in my pickup, which was expensive but I got about 12 years out of it. This makes it the least expensive battery available.
If the speedCell lasts for 10 years, it would offset the cost greatly. (Yes, I'm trying hard to justify it!)
The weight savings as well as the size, which would give me more room for other stuff under the seat are powerfully attractive to me.
Drool drool

Froggy, tell me about the warrenty you got with your SpeedCell battery, please.

Speed cell? Come on. Your kidding me, right? $250 to save a few ounces? Little extreme there.... If you want a battery that will last more then a few seasons, go with an Odyssey. http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?Ntt=PC +545MJ&x=29&y=15&searchinresults=false&Ntk=Keyword Search&DDS=1&N=700+400109+115

I don't believe there is one, I never bothered to ask. One of the resellers claims 2-3 years of life like a typical lead battery. If it last that long, great, if not I will just buy another one when the time comes.

Actually you will save about 144 ounces. It is not extreme at all, extreme is when you remove the stator assembly to reduce rotating mass, which you could do with this battery. It also matches my $4000 Carbon fiber rims : D
(Ok I wish I had $4k CF rims)

The HD battery and Speedcell are both made in America. (Looking up Odyssey but can't confirm if they are made here or not). If you wanted to you could disassemble and eat the non-toxic Speedcell if you were hungry enough. : )

You can't buy motorcycles and ATVs for kids anymore because of the lead in batteries, using one of these batteries plus a few other part changes will make them available again. I wonder if Yamaha sells CF rims for the 50.... : )

Original battery in my 03 XB9SL just started acting up... Lasted right about SIX years! (w/tender). Replaced it with a H-D original. Same as the one for the V-Rod. About $100 and in stock at the local dealer.

I replaced mine with the original Harley.
I was happy with the original and the price was not bad for a replacement. - (had a coupon for money off).

I now keep the new one on a Battery Tender.
(good advice)

With a battery tender, I got 5 years out of my stocker. No reason to replace with another brand...
$70 if you take it home and install yourself. Charge it overnight before using it to start the bike.

Does anyone know which HD's use the exact same battery as an '06 Uly?

I wanna be prepared for when the parts guy says there is no battery in stock for my Buell. "We don't have that in stock. Would you like to order it?" are his two favorite sentences.

I have had good luck with Harley batteries, the one on my Sportster was 7 years old when I sold the bike and still going strong.

My Buell battery is about a year and a half old and is doing well, so I will probably stick with the stock battery if this keeps up.

As a comparison, my Honda VFR goes through a battery about every 2 years, I am on my 3rd one now.

The speedcell battery is made from A123 cells. Same stuff that Dewalt uses in their Lithium 36v. If you make it yourself, the price is about half. Cells are 14.50 a piece. I think you need around 8 to 12 cells wired 4s2p or 4s3p for fuel injection. looks like Froggy's pack has 12 cells, about $175 for the cells.

Link:http://www.a123systems.com/products

A 26650 cell ( 2.3 amp/hr.)can continuous discharge rate of 70 amps or 120 amps for 10 secs. Good for 1000 cycles. They are very safe and durable. Froggy, did speedcell recommend 8 cells or 12?

I got the 12 cell, but that was what he recommended because of my "unique" electrical load. Not sure if the Buell would be fine with the 8 normally.

Fastxb12r, retail on a new one is $99, some badweb sponsors even give a small discount on that too, not sure how the dealer charged you 40% more than MSRP.

The stock Harley battery rattled itself to death TWICE in my old Cyclone but lasted the entire time I had my XB12Ss. Otherwise, I'd go with Odyssey.

Odyssey batteries have a warrenty of 400 cycles and 2 years. Considering the price vs cycle duration, SpeedCell is a better buy. Especially if you throw in weight diff, space savings and the fact that you don't have to change it out for over twice as long.

I've got stock Harley batteries on both the 12S and S3T. They haven't given me any problems so I see no need to switch to something else.
