I found an AGM Everstart battery at wally world yesterday for $70. I was looking to price an el-cheapo to use temporarily till I can get $ for either the stock batt or a speedcell. The Everstart AGM just might be a more permanent (cheaper) solution. I need to do something quick. My old batt has just about had it and will leave me a pedestrian soon. |

I had one of those WalMart "AGM" batteries in my KLR-250. Lets just say it's a good thing the KLR is kick start In under 1000 miles, the battery was cracked and leaking and would not hold a charge. I'm not sure what "absorbed glass mat" is supposed to mean, but I know the Harley AGM battery is a solid block and is completely sealed from the factory. The "Everstart" battery however (made by Johnson Outboard I think) has to be filled with fluids when you get it, will slosh around from then on, and has caps that snap on and off for refilling. I could care less if my 1985 KLR-250 has battery acid drooling down the side.. I have strategically covered the entire bike with a thick layer of Ohio slime-clay, and the bike is kick start only. I topped it back off with distilled water, epoxied the crack back shut, and use it to keep the headlight lit if I stall in an intersection and to add a load to keep my from burning up a voltage regulator. It's more of a capacitor then a battery at this point. It would have been a MAJOR bummer to see that battery acid drooling down the underseat tray (and shock?) of my 9sx. YMMV. Just know the risks you are signing up for. |

How do you slap a LiIon battery pack into a bike without the (fairly sophisticated) intelligent charger, and not blow stuff up? Do those cells have the smart charger embedded? Not a bad idea if they do... but I didn't think they were made that way. |
