I replaced heads on my xb 12. I used Cometic gaskets, while torqueing the head bolts to the correct specs Cometic requires, the longer bolts on one head clicked my torque wrench but they sprung back about an 1/8 in when I released the wrench. Could they be bottoming out before I reach the required torque, should I use washers? anyone run into this problem? what did you do? thanks |

I'm not 100% sure with the XB, but for a sportster motor here's the torque procedure. Torque sparkplug side first(all the same torques), rear head bolt first 96-120 in/lbs, then other bolt on that side, the opposite side do rear bolt then front bolt. Now in the same sequence torque them to 13-15ft/lbs. Now loosen them all in that sequence and retorque exactly the same. For the rear cylinder its sparkplug side front then rear, then the opposite side front then rear, same exact sequence. Now again thats per the sportster motor and it should be the same being that 2/3 of the motor are sportster parts. Hope this helps you out |
