My xb9r will not start unless the kickstand is up?? When I turn the key on, the gauges sweep, but no idiot lights. If I pull in on the clutch lever the N light will come on. When I put the kickstand up all lights come on and the bike will start. And my Neutral light stays on through all the gears? Any ideas?? |

03s have a kickstand safety switch.Try and bypass and see what happens.Also neutral switch maybe bad about $13 when I changed mine. |

My '03 9R will start with the kickstand down and, if I leave it idling pointed anywhere but uphill, it will fall down. Does the Canada model not have that safety switch? Would suggest more that it's your neutral switch that's bad. I think the idea is that the kickstand sensor prevents the bike from being started in gear. That was recognized by the neutral sensor. The clutch lever sensor does the same thing and is less frustrating so that was kept and the kickstand one discontinued. My guess anyway. Sounds like your neutral sensor is acting up anyway so that would be my first guess. It's acting backwards, not recognizing neutral and indicating neutral when you know you're in gear. |

If it's the last thing I do, I'm gonna strip all that electronic crap off my Uly. I don't need a safety device to prevent me from starting the bike in gear. I pull the clutch in every time. I don't need a safety device to kill the engine when the bike goes down, I have a kill switch. I wonder how much all that electronic redundancy weighs? |

Maybe it's my age but I love this electronic crap. Starter stuff has never inconvenienced me so that's good. Seen enough mystery carburation issues that affect starting to make me recognize a good thing. Ever try to start a car with a crank? Did that for a year when the starter went on my Peugot 504. Yep, electronics are my friend. Seen enough engines destroyed because buddy is hurt over here and bike is over revving way over there, throttle buried in the mud. (Begs the question, why are the kill and throttle usually on the same side?) Compared to all the weight loss bikes have gone through in the last thirty years, there's lots of room left over for the weight of electronics. Points and cams? Hope I never see them again. |

I rode the bike yesterday and it runs great! I just have to look at the Neutral light all day. A couple of times when I stopped to get gas, when restarting nothing on the instrument cluster worked. As I was going down the rode it just started working?? |

NVT, that's certainly not normal. You must have a short to ground of the neutral switch wire going to the ECM somewhere in the wire harness. This could be anything like wire insulation abrasion exposing the wire or cuts in the insulation near frame contact points. A good place to start looking is the area around the steering neck where the wire bundle can move when the handlebar turns. Another place to look for wire insulation abrasion is around the neutral switch which is behind the front drive sprocket. |
