Santa brought me a set of Woodcraft clipons and it finally got warm enough to put them on my XB12S. I am using Teddagreek's approach, with 1" spacers to make room. The clamps have no rise to them, so there are cable & hose routing challenges. The brake hose is too long now and I hope the R hose is shorter. The throttle cables need another try at routing for gentler bends. The clutch cable may need a hole through the left instrument cluster housing half. I will check with Woodcraft first to see if they make 54mm riser clamps. I used nylon spacers that don't look the greatest and will check out aluminum ones or cut up a 1/4" SS nipple.

Any suggestions?

HD of Edison was one of the best HD Buell dealers around, I've bought many HD's there and a new S3T back in 99.

Anybody know what happened to the original owners? I have been living in Az last 8 yrs. Dealers here can't compair to HD of Edison.

what does that have to do with this post?

-i would check with woodcraft about the risers, i have clubman style bars on my 9s and i had to drill a whole in the housing... not to big of a task}

I have also been thinking about getting clip on handlebars. My buddy has some vortex clip ons on his R6. I was looking to get some of those. Which ones would be the best to get? Those or the woodcraft. Also what size clip ons do you get? It says that the XB has 43mm forks but you got 54mm. Thats also what the vortex website says to get. I'm just confused on the sizes.

54mm is the diameter of the outer tube ('07 XB12S), just under the top triple clamp, where the clip-on clamp will grab. Your fork slider may be 43mm diameter. Measure things like this, don't completely trust catalogs when it is so easy to measure.

The Woodcraft clamps are 2 piece, so you don't have to take off the upper triple clamp. You may want more rise than the Vortex or Woodcraft. See http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/361089.html

The Crossroads bars are probably less work. I have found that I have to use XB12R throttle and clutch cables and front brake hose. But, if I wanted it easy, I'd have gotten a riceburner.

Have you tried lubing the cables?

Can you take a picture of the routing?

The Wood Crafts look good...


I had Crossroads before the clip ons... They are bolt on kit and people have problems with them..

I have the new cables in hand and have even installed the brake hose. Very easy to bleed!

Anyway, it is too cold in the garage to pull the air filter base off of the hoses, so I am on hold now. Here are some pix of my modded instrument housing half to let the clutch cable have a straight shot at the lever perch.

Good pic. My clutch lever is maybe 1.5" lower so my cable would hit the housing.

I'm going to warm up the hose ends with the heat gun to pull them out of the filter base tomorrow, so I can get on with the throttle cables. The clutch cable swap should go ok, too. Now, if it would just warm up. Maybe some bearable days in a few weeks.

One more aspect to deal with is the lower headlamp mount. With the 1" spacers, I have decided to make a Z bracket to connect the bottom of the headlamp assembly to the stock bracket.

That front housing looks complicated at first, but everything unplugs and it is one more well-engineered feature of our bikes.

Almost done. Hooking the throttle cables to the throttle body was fairly easy after I held the butterfly open with a dowel. I got a buddy to weld a 1" extension on the ign/fork lock, so that it would work, even with the housing spaced out from the forks.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing but I'm stuck on 2 bolts I think there stars with a nipple in the middle by the ign lock what size is that.

Those are Tamper-Proof Torx bolts...not sure what size off the top of my head though.

T45 Sears sells them. Unfortunately you'll probably never use it again.

I decided the 1" long tube spacers for the headlight assembly didn't look good enough, so I got a piece of 1/2" x 1" aluminum bar and bored holes for the three bolts across the top. It turns out that the pad for the center bolt in the triple clamp is not flush with the outboard pads and the overlap of the two housing halves projects out from the surfaces that the bar would bear on on the outside. So, I had to get out the files and take approx. .080" off the ends on the back edge and off the middle on the front edge. A lot of work, but satisfying now that it is bolted back together. Now for the weather to get warm enough to ride and see if the bars are too low or not.
