i took my bike in for its 1000 mile service last week. On the drive home i noticed that after stopping at a light the idle would idle fine. but every 30 sec or so it would drop almost to stall. I thought they must have ran fuel injector cleaner though it or something. So i left it be and just rode. A week or 200 miles later it is still doing it, One point it stalled.
It does it in the morning when cold and also when it is warm. I was wondering what you guys think. I work 80 hours a week and cant get it in because harley close's at 6pm. Maybe saturday ill take it down there and have it looked at on my lunch hour.
Thanks in advanced
reuben

ps. the bike used to idle at 1000 before i brought it in. Now it idles at around 900 most of the time sometimes 1000.

Had the same problem after they installed the racekit on mine at 1000 miles.

Two things:
1.) The idle might be too low. Make sure you run around 1150 rpm (average) if it is running lower those occasional dips simply take it down too low.
You can find the idle screw behind the left side air scoop. Look from the front of the bike and you will find the knob. Use a proper allen wrench and increase the idle a touch. I think it was clockwise for higher rpm and counterclockwise to lower. The idle screw does have some play before it starts to affect idle.
2.) Make sure you reset the ECM by riding the bike at Highway speeds for 2 min at 3000 rpm. Should put you around 55 mph.

This also took care of some throttle body back firing.

Hope this helps!

I agree. I also suggest you find another tech to work on your bike.

ditto everything said so far and it sounds like they did not get the tps reset correct. but like franken said get it up to temp and make sure it is Idleing at about 1150 if it is set to low it will do what say occassionaly.
its not a harley it don't like to Idle at 850rpm

I had the same problem, took it to the dealer and the found that the intake was loose. They replaced the seals and tightened it up and it has been fine.Just a thought, but it sounds the same as mine

Varying idle *can* be a sign of intake leaks - which is a very bad thing ;). You can check it yourself;

Ride the bike around to warm it up. Park it still idling and spray water mist in around the intake. If the idle changes you have a leak. You can also use more volatile stuff to spray, but water should work.

Damn its looking like it may be the intake leak. I adjusted the idle to around 1150 and it still jumps around alot. Also when slowing the rpm sticks at 2k for a lil bit and slowly go's down. The service manual says this is normal if the idle is too high.
Im going to take it in during my lunch hour tomarrow. Should i mention to the tech that it may be an intake leak?
hopefully they can fix it in an hour; cause thats all i have for lunch.

just went out back and tried to turn the idle back down and while i was doing it; it was dark outside. I noticed a spark from the plug wire to the engine. I think there may be a short in the wire or a bad plug or something. It is probally something more like they forgot to plug it back in because it has done it sence i got it back.
