This applies to my Buell Bodywork with a rock divot...as well as a possible scooter replacement for my stolen Aprilia... Does anybody have a recommendation for filling scratches and scuffs before priming and painting when the surface is plastic instead of metal? | ||

buell body work is not painted, the plastics are that color through and through.... you can act like its metal, using polishing steps then use a plastics buffing compound | ||

See with deep scratches though buffing will wear down the surrounding areas...I am looking to fill them....before priming and painting. | ||

Go to your NAPA or good body shop and get spot fill putty. It's like bondo, but made for small dings or chips. Should be enough to fill the pit if its not too bad. scuff it first of course Whats the new scoot? | ||

Sand it to get the rough edge off and automotive bondo will be more then just fine. | ||

I've used regular old bondo on plastic with good results. | ||

Could try welding the plastic huh? whats that? what do you do? get a torch, try to heat the plastic (w/out burning it) to a maluable temperature, then shape it smooth.... sounds like its more of an art than a science.... I actually just might do that, it was in the bank of my mind for my faring.... it has a punture hole in it, and I dont want to buy a new one.. but I'll keep it with a hole, gives the bike some battle scars and personality (Message edited by ochoa0042 on January 10, 2009) | ||

OK, if you get a welding kit like that it comes with welding rods for various plastics. Obviously you have to know what kind of plastic you're trying to repair. How do you know when something is, say ABS? Are the Buell XB fenders ABS? How do you know what kind of adhesive to use on which kind of plastic? It seems like this is a whole separate, vast area of expertise. Confused I am when it comes to plastic. DST | ||

Welding???? He's filling in scratches and scuff's. Bondo will be more then adequate. Easier to shape and finish. | ||

If I was welding a part of the Buell plastic, I'd shave some of it off the back of the part to use as filler. That way you have the right type plastic and the color is already blended right. The ad on the kit 1313 linked says a 13 year old can do it. I was 8 the first time I did it. Used an iron from a wood burning kit I got for Christmas to fix another toy I broke. Melting plastic stinks up the house. CAUTION: Don't breath the fumes!(legal notice done) OH, the trick to welding plastic is don't touch it with the iron. Let the heat transfer to it by radiation or heated air.  | ||

NO! NO! NO! Stop...its not plastic, its not ABS..off hand I dont remember the name but all you have to do is sand it out then wet sand 400 grit then 1000 grit wet sand, then polish by hand with Novus wax. Just take your time sanding and sand it very well with the 1000 grit. I've done it and it works fine. Dont weld, melt, fill ...unless the scratch or what ever is a HUGE one that cant be sanded... in this case I'd just buy a new piece. | ||

west systems makes a plastic bonding epoxy filler. you can use it to make parts and fix cracks holes and etc. it bonds to plastic on our bikes. i have used it for a while now. it works and doesn't peel off. you can even use it to make new shaped parts. works like fiberglass but slower and better. even fixes holes in plastic boats. canoes and etc. even under water. mike | ||

Surlyn!! Thats right..thanks. I'd just hate to see someone bondo with a metal filler than paint over it. That west systems stuff sounds pretty handy though... how does the color match up though? | ||

Surlyn!! Thats right..thanks. I'd just hate to see someone bondo with a metal filler than paint over it. He stated he wants to paint. If you sand and out the scuff,chances are you will see where you did it in the new paint. A filler will allow you to feather it out and get the original shape. | ||

Hey, if you can manage to match the color then go for it. If the scratches are not that deep at all, then Im saying I would just sand then buff the heck out of it. My guess is that it will look painted and the rest will not. | ||

You could just put a Hello Kitty Sticker over it... Thats what the squidlies here do, that or duct tape. | ||
