I know someone had posted this problem a month or so ago, and their problem was improper spark plug/cylinder head threading from the factory. My bike rode great with no fouled plugs for 5k miles, well now the cold weather comes and the bike only runs on the front cylinder. It happened to me first when I was leaving to come home, without tools and no truck, i was forced to ride it on one cylinder in which the 2nd kicked in after a minute or so. Now just one cylinder... I know there's spark because the "prestart spark plug ignition" fires the cylinders before i start the bike making a backfire or "whoosh" sound burning off the excess gas. I know the 08's have a new timing system. The bike's obviously getting fuel and spark, but possibly not at the correct times. Any thoughts on this one??? I've got the HD tech coming to pick the bike up tomorrow from my house, I'll post their diagnosis. |

Sounds like it maybe a fouled plug, from the sound of your dscription sounds like the plug may have been trying to die and then all of a sudden it crapped out on you. |

Fouled plug front cylinder. If its cold and you blip the throttle you can foul a plug.Put a new front plug in and you'll be fine. |

yep fouled spark plug... happen to me too in cold weather... i rode my bike to the dealer to have it fixed.. but it sucked getting it there.. |

The dealership already replaced the plugs once about two weeks ago when this first happened and it didn't fix the issue. I don't blip the throttle and always ride it for at least 20 minutes to warm it up. The Buell Techs at Baltimore HD&Buell said they'll run some tests on it. They were EXTREMELY helpful and even wen to the extent to offer me a Loaner Bike until my bike's fixed (1-2 weeks). I had the choice of a used Dresser, Fat Boy, Night Train, and VRod.....I now have a VRod in my garage and LOVE IT! There's no replacement for my Lightning but this bike is really is a great ride! I'll post the diagnosis once i get it. Thanks for the advice! |

From your description: are you saying that it ran on one cylinder for a bit then kicked into both firing? Is that what happens each time? |

Krueger08xb12s, I had that problem on my 09 Scg and for me it was a faulty ECM but the problem was not only that the bike hasn't been running very well since I got it so it might be a completely different problem. |

Ourdee: The V-Rod is only a "Loaner" bike from the Harley/Buell shop of Baltimore, MD; it's not mine so I won't be doing any mods to it. ArchAngel: the bike would start and run on one cylinder, but because i was forced to ride it home, it kicked into two cylinders about a minute up the road. This happened about twice or three times. The bike would backfire on occasion which indicated to me that it was getting fuel and spark just at the wrong time. The Buell tech explained to me that in cold weather, these bikes not only have an fuel enrichening stage but also have a timing advance stage as well. This may be contributing to the problem and they said they'll run tests and dyno's to diagnose the problem. Since I'm without a bike until they fix it, they gave me a VRod to ride and told me I could come back and swap it out for any of their other Used Bikes if I want! |

That's an unusual combination. The cylinders are not individually timed so I would rule that out. They'd both fail/flood. A dirty air filter would affect both cylinders. It could be a bad plug but you've replaced that. Electrically, it could be a weak battery (unlikely) or a failing coil. There is a coil per cylinder. An injector that's clogged open, or not getting correct info, could cause flooding. They're also one per. I'm leaning more to flooding than lack of fuel because of the temperature factor. Backfire also indicates that it is getting fuel. My guess is faulty injector. Since it is kicking in eventually, the electric communication is probably good. Sounds like it is in good hands now, keep us updated. |

Well when mine was running on one at idle if I tried giving it some more gas to make the rev get higher (before realizing it was running on only one can) it would back fire some times too. Like I said in my previous post they changed the ECM and apparently it is fine now, I say apparent;y because it is still at the dealer since it's winter here and I stored it there. I didn't get to try so it might not be fixed but according to the tech it is. (Message edited by js_buell on January 01, 2009) |

Don't know if mine was running on one cylinder or not, but when I bought my '08 12R, it wouldn't hold idle for more than 5 seconds. It would pop, sputter, then die soon after starting it. I could smell gas, and when the dealer fixed it, they said one of the injectors was stuck open. On the bright side, I've put 5K miles on it with nary a problem since. So the Harley/Buell shop still has my bike and said they're coming up with some weird data from the bike and are talking to the manufacture about possible solutions... Well on Friday they had the bike on the dyno and dropped it!!! They're replacing the front rim (scratched & chipped), oil cooler & scoop (broken & bent), side rail, my custom tail (needs repainted), footpeg, and shifter! To top it all off, in a completely different incident earlier in the week one of their techs burnt his hand on the header and needed to get surgery and a skin graph! All in all, I still have the loaner VRod and I'm thinking about switching it for a full dresser on Tuesday! I'll post the diagnosis once it's actually determined. |
