I layed my bike down not too long ago and I'm in a bind about what to do. First damage was limited to turn signals, grips, mirrors, pegs, and starter switch assembly. Also, my frame is now completly pushed in where the right frame puck was. No fuel is leaking and its not punctured. Worse comes to worse, I could slap a new frame puck over it and cover most of the damage. I can replace everything for less than 200.00 bucks and I will take it in to the dealership for a service check. But, do I report this to the insurance company. Will they want to total it out because of the frame?? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! |

If the dent in the frame is bigger than a puck, fill and shape it with aluminum epoxy (devcon). First remove the paint and scratch it up a bit so the epoxy has something to hold on to. Then put a new puck on and forget about it. Then replace the broken parts and your bike is as good as new for under $300.00. Don't call the insurance company unless you want your rates to go up. |

In my experience, you only "have" to report stuff to insurance if: a) someone else (or their property) was involved b) you can't afford to pay to have it fixed, out of pocket c) serious structural damage was done to the vehicle that should be repaired and documented for future reference (i.e. if an automotive frame pull 'goes bad') d) (this is a judgement call) if the vehicle is still under warranty - a personal preference, but I let others handle it 'just in case' there's a warranty issue later to try and avoid the "you did this so you're not covered" discussion. In your case, I would: have a dealer check the frame, and document the lack of leaks and verify there are no other issues, so you have that paperwork. Fill any part of the ding that sticks out past the puck, get some frame paint from Buell, touch it up (DON'T cover your VIN boss or the decal), put on a new puck, keep an eye for leaks, and photo-document your repairs for future reference (i.e. if you ever sell the bike - I'm the sort who's "too honest" when I sell my stuff, I'd rather do that than "lie" about its history). I'm getting ready to put a new windshield on my Jeep - it's waaay out of warranty (a '92), it's beat, and the deductible is higher than the $60 a local boneyard is charging for the windshield assembly (it's a Wrangler - the glass and frame all bolts right on). And, it gives me something to do for a weekend - a day in the 'yard, pulling; a day in the garage, installing. I know. A whole weekend? I still move real slow after my accident |

jeff, when did you go down?? keep it a secret even if your decuctible is less than the repair cost. your premuim will soon remind you of your morgatge payment. better yet; don't tell your insurance you even ride your bike, ever. inform them it's really a H-D, and you keep it in storage at SSHD. wanna split a pack of pucks? i'm in need of some left side breakables. we should get together on and spilt the replacement parts. i got some stock mirrors for you. |

Matt, went down a while ago actually and have just been riding my wife's cityX. Was only going about 35 when I hit something slick and the front tire pulled a sudden hard right and the next thing I know I'm doing a superman down the road while the bike slid about 40 ft into the opposite lane. A little road rash but nothing major. Thanks for offer on parts, but I all ready got the pucks. Your welcome to the left one if you need it. I'm going with some aprila mirrors. |

I did the same thing to mine in 06. Had a minor "mishap". Frame dented in where old puck was. I took the old puck off, put a new one on, replaced shifter and turn signals and called it a day. I didnt report it to my insurance co. Why? Bike still worked fine! And Im still riding the crap out it today! It has some cosmetic damage but I call them "battle wounds"..... |
