Copied from the quickboard: Well, after a couple years of thought, a year of actually doing homework, and about two days of discussion on Badweb, I've registered the domain names for the Buell Registry. It will be a few days before a site is up and running for information submission, and probably alot longer to slog though HD's massive legal department, but it is happening. I registered both TheBuellRegistry.com (as if there could be any other ; ) ) and TheBuellRegistry.org but I'm not sure yet which I'll actually use. I will not be making money on this registry, so I thought ".ORG", but then I realized I may have to charge for some services later on so as not to go broke, and ".COM" is what everyone thinks of, so I got both. I've had multiple inputs from many Badwebber's already (Thanks to all of you!) and I'd like offer some generic answers to repeat questions (and hopefully incur MORE FEEDBACK). Yes, it's worldwide. Buells, Buell owners, and Buell enthusiasm is worldwide, so the registry shall be too. (Any ideas on language translation?) Yes, it's for ALL Buell motorcycle models. If somebody calls me with a guitar, bicycle, box of accessories, etc, they will be documented as well. Yes, it will be as secure as possible. I do intend to keep every bike on a secure server, and NO Owner info will be sold, given away, traded, lost, mishandled or transferred to anyone else, ever, unless OK'd by that owner. Every VIN is going to require at least three forms of documentation, that will stay on file permanently. I will try to make as much information as possible as verifiable as possible, and only FACTS will be touted as "information". If it can't be PROVEN, it will be labeled as such. (in other words, no "Viper" edition X1's!) Yes, I will ALWAYS be open to input, and the Registry will always be open to modification due to input. Please input a "reason" for suggestion (In other words, don't tell me to put "titties" on the registry images, unless you specify "Naked girls on Buells" images.) That brings another point. I'd like to include a registry for accessories (preferably Buell, but more popular ones are possible, too) so an owner can say, 'I know where this came from, and that, and that....' when they're assessing their bike. I'd also like to include the rich Buell history of promotional material, images, etc. This will be in addition to the registry, but the registry will be a primary focus. In other words (again), it's impossible to celebrate all Buells without looking at the diversity. Suppose you go to buy a heavily modded Buell. Is it historically significant, or is it a hack job? It's easy to lose the history on a bike, so we hope to get those questions answered for you. My goals will be outlined for the Registry as a whole shortly. Thanks for your help, and your advice, -John Self End Paste: If you'd like to get to know me better, PM me! I'd love to hear ANY submissions! |

So as I understand the definition of a "registry", your database would be a place to register our bikes, owner history and service history? Is that the main purpose, or is there further benefit to your new endeavor? |

Hmmmmmm...... Seems a little too open to revealing sensitive identity info. How will you get all the Buell owners to participate? They can't even agree on the use of Teflon tape. |

Also to include build numbers, rarity, motor/frame re-unification, previous-owner/bike reunification, etc. The aforementioned data would also allow buyers to verify that a bike they're buying is legitimate (not an eBay frame with a stolen-and-sold-at-a-swapmeet motor, or avoid a bike advertised as an XB12R, when it's really a painted XB9R, etc) A large portion of this is really for tube-frame models which are a little more "unique" (in the sense of rarity, being chopped, diversity of colors, etc) but adding XB's, 1125's, etc., will serve to offer the same protections to those owners as well. As part of the registry, I follow all parted frames and motors that are "found" (as in loose. Not in a bike somewhere) and cross-referenced with known stolen bikes in an attempt to re-unite stolen goods with the proper owners. I have several other services planned, but not enough time to highlight them now. While BadWeb has done an excellent job of compiling VIN's and owner info, I did see a need for "worldwide" information, too. (For example, your XB gets stolen and turns up at a flea market in Mexico. The police won't know to look for it, and the owner may not know it's hot, but a buyer doing homework before buying it may check in and that's an opportunity to prevent shafting a potential Buell enthusiast and also an opportunity to return the bike to it's "rightful" owner). |

Some concerns are highlighted here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/418177.html?1228274285 A big part of ANY registry is trust, and part of the registry paperwork I'm lining out is a guarantee that ALL information is strictly monitored, locked up tight, and will not be sold, traded, given away, etc. under ANY circumstance unless I have the information-owner's strict written permission. It will be clear that I am liable for your information and it will not be mishandled. Example? Every VIN submission will require (at minimum), photo-password documentation of the vehicle, pencil-rubbing of frame and engine numbers, proof of ownership, and probably another form of vehicle verification. Every file will contain the above hard-copy (digital photo's can be manipulated), are kept under dual lock and key (One box in another with each locked). I have a single set of keys, the only other set goes into a safe deposit box with only my lawyer having access. If an owner chooses, their info can be made available to the public. Otherwise, only general notation of the vehicle will be posted on the registry. (In other words, the registry will say something like "Black XB12R #220307 was built on 12-25-04, with 370 other examples know to exist", or similar depending the info that Buell owners want listed) The advantages of registering are numerous, and will be posted shortly, as well as details. You can also research classic car registration if you have questions. -John |

And teflon-tape discussion will be referred to any number of qualified Buell enthusiast sites. Registries are based on FACT, and fact alone. |
