I just had an interesting discussion with the local dealer here about some "issues" they have been having with the 12s. Apparently there are some concerns around significant performance variations on the motors this year - they don't have a dyno but SOP indicates to them that this is the case - they even tore a brand new motor down and had it shipped back to Buell because it was much weaker than the 9 motor on their test sled. Having personally gone from a 9 to a 12 I do see a difference on the mid range torque but the top end really seems weaker than on the 9 and it won't stand up in 2nd like the 9 used to. Any thoughts or experiences out there to "benchmark" against? I'll run a dyno ASAP here and let you know the results. |

seat of the pants will feel like not much difference up top mainly becuase no there isn't that much. Its down low and thru the mid range. I was looking at some dynos yesterday and at 4k rpm. a 9 with a drummer on it and a 12 with a drummer on it. at 4k its 20 hp different.... but up top think about it. longer stroke ain't for top end....short stroke is.... like women tell us ....size ain't everything.... plus its the feel...the 12 is smooth to the point where you can't feel it come on and the 9 you do. so there is a preception thing here also. but nobody ever claimed top end was gonna be significantley different... |

Kaudette, I have to lean on the bars and feather the clutch thru third...but mine has also dynoed on 2 different dynos at 94RWHP so as you say YMMV |

Kaudette, I bought the 12 this year because I found the 9 motor a little weak (coming off of a 97 YZF1000R). The 12 though, has the punch torque I always wanted in a bike. I rode the two back to back (9 and 12), and the 12 drives forward much harder...but the top end, as you said, isnt as 'sweet' as the 9's. As Buckinfubba said though, the stroke wont make the top any better! As far as performance inconsistencies in the 12 motors go, we havent been hearing any this in Canada. 12's are consistently performing strong, and equal, from bike to bike. I like the differences in the 9 and 12's, its not like the 9 is a baby 12. The 9 gives a rider a totally different riding experience. I know a lot of Buellers who for the track, will have nothing but a modified 9. They dont want the 12's. On the other hand, the streetfighters that wanna run madness from stop to stop wont touch the 9's, but then again, they dont want to keep the revs up through track turns. Whatever turns your flywheel..... Jack edited by joojoo on December 13, 2003 |
