So how hard would it be to change the primary drive from a 9 to a 12? Since I'm probably not gonna be getting to the track for quite a while at this point I thought it might be fun to give my 12r the primary of a 9. Sure I'll lose top end, but the only place I'll ever get to that top end is at the track, so I thought I might as well have a little more fun on the street in the meantime. |

Huh?I thought the 9 had higher primary gearing and thats why some people here insisted their 9,s were faster than the 12.I'm confused. |

ok, think of it like this. If your engine puts out a ton of torque, but it turns slow at its max revs, you change the primary gearing to make the power usable. In the past when Aaron commented on the 9R having a mechanical advantage that made its power closer to the 12 even though it has a fair amount less torque, this is what he was talking about. Thats why the 12 (even though it puts out tremendously more torque than a gsxr1000) one the primary drive is adjusted to make the power usable the XB12 ends up being less powerful. Its like the motogp bikes. They don't put out more torque than the 12, its just they they rev twice as high and thus you don't have to gear them like the 12 to make the power usable for speed. I hope that made sense. |

The 9 does 140mph @ 7500rpm The 12 does 140mph @ 6800rpm 7500/6800 gives a gearing difference of 10% Fitting the 9 primary to the 12 will shorten the gears by 10% giving slower top speed and faster acceleration. Fitting the 12 primary to the 9 will lengthen the gearing 10% giving faster top speed less acceleration/more strain on yer fragile likkle engine. Sounds like fun anywho Cya Stot |

Sounds like fun is right, if you don't need the top end. which until I'm going to the track regularly I certainly don't. So back to my question. Anyone know about making this swap what the cost of the parts involved would be? |

To answer your question... No. However, I ran about 140 miles yesterday an my 12 and I would have to say that if you do ANY cruising on ANY highways this may not be a good idea. You'll have to wring the neck of your XB pretty tight to keep up with traffic. Granted, passing would be near instant . |

Thats why the 12 (even though it puts out tremendously more torque than a gsxr1000) You sure about that? Tests from MCN & Sportrider SR..GSXR1000 78ft lbs torque at 8250 rpms XB1212R 77.5 ft lbs torque at 6750 rpms MCN GSXR 75.4 ft lbs XB12S 70.5 ft lbs |

ok take out the word tremendous mr. nitpicker, and just call it MORE torque than that beast of a bike called the gsxr-1000. |

Its not nitpicking, the 12 does not have more torque, read the numbers. The 12 is a great bike, but the GSXR1000 will kick its ass in every possible way that could be imagined. edited by dynarider on December 08, 2003 |

"the GSXR1000 will kick its ass in every possible way that could be imagined." I disagree with you Dyna, I can think of 2 categories where I know the Buell smokes anything...SMILES and STARES

I can agree with the stares portion, but the smiles part...nah. Basically any bike I am on thats running good will bring a smile to me. Its not the bike but rather the ride that gets me smiling. |

You forgot looks and sound! You also forgot handling. Can a Gsxr 1000 kick a XB12s ass? In many ways yes but not in every way that could be imagined. Ride to the edge! Dave Iowa HD/Buell (Buell Cycle Center) |

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=32777&post=214049#POS T214049 This is an incorrect assertion, as clinical tests that I have recently undertaken here in London have proved beyond doubt that that the XB12 out performs the Susuki in terms of birds shagged per weekend. |

Compare fuel efficiency, the GSXR ain't even close. Compare the sound and feel of the bikes. Compare maintenance requirements. The Buell kicks the GSXR's ass in many categories, just not in a race. Good call though on the torque, Dyna. You saved me from having to refute that mistaken claim. |

Boulder, I think it would be a lot of fun to try. Before you do it though consider that an XB9 is doing 4000rpm at 70mph. |

slide an XB and a Gixr down the road. I'll watch this space for the results. |

The Buell kicks the GSXR's ass in many categories, just not in a race. And thats a fact. Well said Blake. And I had to correct the torque deal misinformation. Yes the Buell XB12 has a great torque curve, but that doesnt mean an RC51 or a GSXR1000 or a Busa have nothing. Those bikes have just as much. The RC51 is real damn close, within a couple ft lbs. edited by dynarider on December 08, 2003 |

FYI, the torque comment is coming from comparitive dynos, and the Suzuki had less peak torque in every dyno I've ever seen. Now HP thats a different story, which was my point of the entire thread. I understand the difference between the two in case you didn't read my earlier posts. Now back to my original question. Anyone know what this would involve? I'm not really concerned about the revs it would turn, when I cruise freeway I'm never doing over 70, all my fun on the streets is in the canyons by my home and I top out at 70 in those. Moving on.... edited by boulderbiker on December 09, 2003 |

I'm more into the motogp scene myself. Nothing like watching open class motorcycles putting out 230hp with the worlds most talented riders. Lets see Maladin take on the big boys |

Dyna hates Buells so arguing with him is futile. He will just keep coming up with "reasons" why you are wrong. I tend to disagree, he may dislike his Buell, who wouldnt considering its current state, and he may dislike his dealer, again after what has happened, who wouldnt, however i belive if he had the means at this point, Dyna may actually consider a new buell, plus on this point he is correct, and he has been very nice latley so no need to stir the pot JMHO Roger |

Boulder, Looks like You will only need to change the front sprocket inside the primary and the chain. XB9 frt sprocket is a 34 tooth XB12 is 38 tooth Clutch end sprocket is the same Adjuster is the same You'd need a primary gasket and some new fluid. I'd give you prices but the part number in the book for the sprocket comes up as invalid on HD net, I checked it twice. The primary chain is 59.05 list Hope this helps, I'll get a price on the sprocket if any of you are interested in doing this. Ride to the edge! Dave Iowa HD/Buell (Buell Cycle Center)

OK, To swap your 12 to a 9 primary you'll need. 40241-02 34 tooth frt sprocket 92.43 primary chain for the 9 62.01 plus the gasket and fluid Am I forgetting anything guys? 10% discount would come off these prices for you. Ride to the edge! Dave |

Eboz is old school and a two-wheeled magician. Maladin, who's also a great freaking rider, whines way too much. He needs to take BuckinFubba's advice and "ride his bad motoscooter." I like 'em all, love to watch them run, I've seen a number of them live and on Speedvision. I wish everyone on this thread could've seen Gene Church in his prime on LH. You like to watch bad motoscooters running hot and hard? Gene played LH like Jimi Hendrix played the guitar. Now, get on your bad motoscooter and ride. Greg |

Roger, exactly. Nowhere in this post have I said "buells suck" or "buells are slow". All I pointed out was the inaccuracy of the torque deal. Its ludicrous to keep comparing the XB's to bikes like the GSXR1000. A few years ago that bike would have made the front grid at an ama race. That thing is nothing less than a full on race bike in street clothing. And handling?? The GSXR weighs 20 lbs less than the Buell & handles exceptionally well. The XB's are fine bikes in their own way, quit comparing them to race replicas tho. Oh yea 1 more thing...Bruce is a troll who simply goes from board to board in an attempt to antagonize me. Already been chased off a couple boards. |
