Just bought a used 2007 XB12S. My first bike and I love it. What is an equivalent engine and transmission oil to the factory recommended Harley Davidson products?

1st: read your owners manual.
2nd: buy a Factory Service Manual. Don't complain, just do it!
3rd: any API "C" oil in correct vis range for your local temperatures.
4th: check with oil manufacturer. They WILL respond to your email.

Easy answer: best value is Mobil 1 full synthetic (Extended performance?), 15 - 50 in both engine and tranny. Delvac is also a very good choice. NAPA Gold is among the best oil filter choice as well. Check their website for correct part numbers. You can't go wrong with this combination.

Welcome to the family : )

I have no experience with the mobile 1 15w50 oil, but after reading a few oil analysis from people using it, i'm not sure i'd try it.

3,000 miles and it sheared down to a 40w, what would the viscosity be after the recommend 5,000 miles?

The mobil 1 20w50 seems to fair better, but I think i'm going to try a conventional oil and change every 2,000 miles.

If you have a warranty, you had better used the recommended oil from your service manual. HD 20W50

Do NOT use any oil in the transmission that is not safe for Harley Davidson primary!

Everyone is so worried about their warranty. I don't have a warranty, but even if I did it wouldn't affect the brand of oil I use. If you use the correct viscosity and recommended change intervals, then you shouldn't have to worry about your warranty. My car has a warranty, but I don't use motorcraft oil in it.

I thought Mobil 1 was known to cause problems with the stator, it could be a different brand though. Anyways, I use Syn 3, which is HD's synthetic, bike runs smoother on it.

Only gear oil with a GL-5 rating. The mobile 1 v-twin oil is good for both holes.

Using a non-harley product will not invalidate your warranty. There are consumer protection laws stating that. But if you used the wrong fluid and something breaks, good luck getting your dealer to foot the bill.

Welcome to the madness. I have a 07 12s, been using Mobil 1 20/50 vtwin engine and primary. Purchased bike new 5-29-08 now have 14000mi. No problem. Change every 3000. IMPORTANT always let bike warm up before hammerin it.I ride rain or shine. Will bear the cold to about 30 degrees.I bought it to ride, not to look at. Other wise I would have bought a piece of art. Good luck and be safe.

Schaffer #705 7000 syn 20-50 is the best. Just ask around. Mobil 1 is not comparable. It is also about $3.00 per qt. cheaper.

Thanks again. Just to make sure, one more questions. Is everyone always using the same oil for both engine and transmission?
