How important is it to pull the clutch lever in 3 times when adjusting the clutch? I can understand 2 times not being enough but what if you pull it more than 3 times, will it affect the adjustment in any way?

I can't see how pulling the lever in more than 3 times can hurt. I know that I should just pull it 3 times and not have to ask this question, but I am curious.

Also, "lightly bottoms"? Does this mean as soon as I feel the most slightest bit of friction through the shaft of my screwdriver, or do I pass that point until it actually lightly bottoms, like as if I was torquing the screw to an inch pound of torque? The last adjustment I did created a little bit of slippage when I would shift into third when I am on the throttle pretty hard. I know that this is from turning in the adjustment screw CCW too far, but do other XB's have a little bit of slippage when trying to clutch the front end up in third gear?

All working the lever does is remove slack in the adjuster, and seat the (here it comes) balls, in the ramps. You don't need to work the lever, as your cable slack should be excessively loose.

Turn the adjustment screw till it gets firm, and go another 1/2 turn (you'll KNOW it).

Then back it off till it gets loose, tighten to tight spot with thumb-and-index finger, then back off 1/4 turn.

Done! (assuming you've collapsed cable adjuster completely, first, of course).

Then you can adjust the cable to set your handlebar lever. Leave a touch of play at the lever (1/2" at the end, or a nickle's thickness at the gap).

If it bottoms at all, the good news is you probably won't even have to go half on the cab fare to take her home. Hell, you may even get a referral or two.

If you pull it any more than three times you're just playing with it.
