....so are my rims ruined now? they have some residue all over them now that will not come off.... any ideas? | ||

I had a similar issue but when I used some normal car polish, the wheels came up like new again. The cleaner obviously left a hard residue in the surface of the paint. | ||

That powder coat is a plastic film. Brake cleaner melts into the plastic. Try some rubbing compound it will make the rims a little more shiny too. | ||

try meguires cleaner wax and then the #2 polish. You rims will come out better than new. | ||

Ouch. Yeah, read the label. Brake cleaner is not a friend of paint. That sucks!  ~SM | ||

Speaking of cleaning rotors.... I unintentionally ran my rear pads to the aluminum. Changed pads but there is aluminum on the rotor. I am guessing that there is no way to get that metal off the rotor other than emory cloth or just wearing it off. Ideas? | ||

^^^^May be a small di-grinder and a light abrasive disc...? It would be easier to do with the rotor off. ....To the original post, I have the gray wheels with the polished edges and used some Purple power sh!t (for car wheels) to clean them one time and it made the whole wheel loose its shine and look cloudy and yucko. I used some 3M rubbing compound and they look better than new. | ||

I use brake clean to take paint off cars like door dings or you open your door and hit a pole at gas station, To clean carpets of cars, And it works well as a starter fluid, We even spray it into tires that wont seat the bead and light em up BOOM they pop right on the rim Hhhm. Take the wheels off tape em for paint and send em to a wheel repair shop i got them to match the paint exactly and it was $89.00 each, They looked better than new. Alchemy Try eagle on never dull or mothers wadding chrome polish it takes of rust so it may work for you and it wont hurt paint, Dunno about plastic! | ||

Dana, Powder coat is indeed plastic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powder_coat "There are two main categories of powder coatings: Thermosets and thermoplastics. The thermosetting variety incorporates a cross-linker into the formulation. When the powder is baked, it reacts with other chemical groups in the powder polymer and increases the molecular weight and improves the performance properties. The thermoplastic variety does not undergo any additional reactions during the baking process, but rather only flows out into the final coating." In any case I had the same thing happen with my wife's CityX. It made the Powdercoat soft and dull. Just wash the wheel really good, and re-buff out the wheel. it will look almost as good as new. | ||

By the same token acrylic paints are also a plastic film, be it acrylic enamels, urethanes or blends, as well as the clear coats that we love and cherish. | ||

I find the Harley Wheel and Tyre cleaner pretty good. I gave some to a friend who had stains that wouldn't seem to budge and they came off pretty easily with this stuff. If you need to go to polishes I'd be careful not to get it on the tyre. |
