when i removed the bolt holding the primary sprocket on my 08, i see it was put on at the factory with blue lock-tite...
the updated bulletin on the high torque and red lock-tite came out in 05...
the only thing i can figure, is that its not lock-tite, but some other blue substance.. any clues?

They have other forms of loctite available to them than red and blue. Ford uses a lot of green and even black.

The service bulletin says to use red because that's what is typically available.

The 08/09 bikes use a bolt to secure the primary sprocket compared to a nut on earlier XB's; IIRC they don't require the high torque as specified in the bulletin for pre-08 XB's. It may be that blue Locktite is sufficient with the new arrangement. I'd check the 08 factory shop manual for the right stuff to use.

well then, how about a favor....

im working out of an 03 service manual, as times are tough....

anyone have an 08 manual that can tell me if the torque and lok-tite specs have changed since the 05 update on the sprocket?

From my '08 manual: Tighten sprocket nut to 50 ft/lbs, scribe a line, then tighten another 30-40 degrees, to a max of 45 degrees. Loctite 271-red.

Original socket head screws on the lockplate have threadlocking compound on them good for 3 install/remove cycles.

Hope this helps, Dave

Sorry about that! About the time I realized you were talking about the engine sprocket re the primary chain, I ran out of volts in my laptop battery. Anyway, from the '08 manual:

Apply 3 drops of Loctite 271 (red) to threads of sprocket shaft. Install engine sprocket bolt, tighten to 155-165 ft/lbs.

Man, I'm glad you posted that. I suspect Werewulf would have been sitting there with a wrung-off bolt in the crankshaft if he'd used the old ~250 ft-lbs torque recommendation from the pre-08 XB's.

everything is pretty much the same as the 03 book, except a few upgraded parts...the way i go thru buells, i would have a fortune in manuals alone..

well, i got the sprocket installed on the 08... it purrs like a cat...

what a fun bike these things are when you put the xb9 sprocket in them... its got to be the best bang for the buck going... i still got almost 50 mpg on my 06 model...it remains to be seen what this bike will get..

this is especially a good mod on the 08s, due to the tendency to hesitate at low speeds...

i bought a new bolt that attaches the sprocket and to my suprise, it already had a blue lock patch on it... i still put a couple of drops of red lok-tite on it...

im happy...

I looked at my 06 XBS manual, and in comparison to the 04 XB manual, it looks like lots of bolts don't require locktite anymore.

The 03 and 04 XB's had much more engine vibration transmitted to the frame of the bike requiring copious amounts of Red Loctite.

Turns out this was caused by a bad rotator splint, but a patch on the Fetzer valve with 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads fixed everything right up.
