G,day from Australia.
I,ve been browsing the site for a few months now and soaking up all the info at hand.
Bought myself a new/secondhand 9S 4 weeks ago.
Loving it.
It had done 12,000klms when I bought it, now its done 16,500klms.
The issue is its used 2 litres of oil in this time!
What sort of consumption does everyone else experience. I'm thinking this can't be right.
Its running the standard 'Harley' oil at the moment. Will change to synthetic at next service (2 weeks).}
Buell ownership can be pretty lonely here (apart from all the people that stop and look and chat everytime I get fuel etc) Theres not many on the road, So I'm looking forward to chatting with you guys. }

No oil consumption here on my 9S. I have synthetic oil in the motor.

How hard do you run your Buell? Even so, the rate of consumption you mention seems out of line.

Dang!

Is that thing part of the mosquito control program in OZ?... There should be a blue fog that follows you around at that rate (2790Mi); that only leaves .4 liters in the oil tank?... not good... In the short term I'd take the plugs out and have a look-see... See if you're burning oil or leaking it.... But what you describe is definetly not good/normal....

I changed to syn on a bike I had with 7800Km, had a bad experience. It had HD oil in it all its life. That engine started leaking oil from every seam it could ended up selling the bike because of the leaks. I don't recommend converting to synthetic. As for my XB, mine doesn't use any oil.

On my previous XB9R wich i've had for a year.I've don 15000km's with it,mostly very hard one's (full throttle) and i've never had anymore than 0.1litre oil to add after a checkup at 2500km intervalls. I think your bike has been porely run in or there's something not wright inside your engine.

Mark,

I have an XB9S with 6000km. No oil consumption. I know your feeling of Buell loneliness in Australia. I am from Brisbane also. Email me if you want to meet up for a ride or swap some good ride routes. I am always keen for a ride but fairly busy till christmas.

Hmmmm... I changed my fluids at around 700 miles... Went to synthetic in both and around 1800 checked and the oil (not tranny) was right at the low mark. I put in 4 ozs(that put it right at the top) and I'm hoping that it's just breaking in... I"ve got around 2000 on the odo now and I'll change it again at around 2500 so we'll see... Anybody else have one use a bit while it was getting broken in???

You must check oil while resting on side stand, if you check it upright it will appear to be low, when you unknowingly overfill it, it will blow through the air cleaner. just a thought.

Mark, got your email, like Leon I'm also busy till after Xmas (doing overtime/parties/mad time of year/spontaneous rides only). So that makes at least 3 Lightnings in Briso on Badweb, not bad...

Just wonderin if Steelshoe might be on the right track, also make sure engine is hot when you check it, otherwise it will indicate low oil - well the 12 does. I doubt that M & W would knowingly sell you an oil-consuming bike. Have you asked them about it?

Hey Freyke the weird thing is it does'nt leave a smoke screen it just seems to disapear. Does not leak a drop from anywhere, engine and cases and concrete floor always clean.
Hey steelshoe yep checked on sidestand with warm motor.
Well Bluefirebolt good to know i haven't overly abused it and hurt it, it gets a workout with full throttle and also many klms/miles of easy cruising.
No Opto haven't spoken to M&W yet. Thought I'd get some background on others experiences and arm myself with a few facts first. Thanks guys for sharing your experiences.
I actually bought their race-kitted demonstrator/salesmans personal ride bike. So this consumption is wholly un-expected as the bike has been with them from new.
So will chat with them when it goes in for service next week. Will keep you guys posted on how effectively they resolve what is a definite problem.

The three lightnings in brisvegas definitely need to get together for a ride in the new year.
Went to Sydney last week to ride with Gaz X1 and Bob XB9S.
These guys are patiently trying to get a Buell site moving and organise rides.
Any Aussies try this site and help them kick it along http://au.msnusers.com/BuellinOz
Ah well in the absence of BRAG we gotta do what we can.
Miles of Smiles to ya all!

Mark,

Have you checked for oil in your airbox? The XB airbox will hold a good amount of oil. It just pools up at the lowest point.

well its in the shop now, had its service.
Havent got it back yet because..........
They also found a broken header bolt and crack in the muffler.
Asked them about the oil consumption.........
Apparently "its not much for these bikes, they all use oil and its well within spec"

Ahhh i feel like screaming, love the bike but this is bullshit.

They want to charge me for the welding to the exhaust. (race kit) because technically its not the standard exhaust. (came with the bike when i bought it from them)

how should i deal with situation?
any help or opinions would be appreciated?
