Not only have both front bolt holes broken off on my air box, but now one of the flipping bolts fell out somewhere. Do the newer air boxes have better construction? I'd be willing to spend $200 for a new one if it's not going to crack the first time I tighten the bolt. I didn't even tighten them that much, that's probably why it fell out. |

The cover? The see through one. The one on my 05 is very brittle it would seem. |

The newer ones are stronger, but still are fragile compared to the solid colors. Take advantage of this, pick any color you want, also get one with the vent up front, they just pwn more automatically. |

If and when you do get a new one...use the blue loctite on the screws. I use it on all of mine. Stays tight enough not to unthread due to vibration but not so tight that you can't get them out. |

So the solid colored ones don't crack? I guess I'll be looking for a sold colored plastic with the vent in front. I'm going to paint it anyway. |

While I have never cracked either, I don't recall ever reading about a solid color one cracking. Also, since your painting you can save a few bucks and get one without a decal. M2224.1ASMAW Artic White, no decal. Retail Price: $176.00 There are used covers on the classifieds all the time, so you can pick one thats beat up there for painting. |

I had a City-X in Hero translucent blue. To note, there is a raised shoulder on the bolt. It will tighten through the hole in the cover and tighten to the threaded nut in the fuel tank side at the same time it tightens on the cover. If the shoulder catches the plastic of the cover it will crack it and allow the bolt to come loose. |

The second one probably cracked because I tried to use the cover to push down on the inner air box. I will take full responsibility for the second one. I will look for a used solid colored cover. I'm currently trying to repair this one by placing a piece of plastic underneath the broken piece and securing everything together using a two part epoxy. That should give it extra strength, but it will also allow me to over tighten the bolts by raising up the cover slightly. |

There's an updated fastener and top-hat washer for those bolts in that location for the Translucid color lids. See your friendly local (and probably ignorant) local parts guy, and make him hunt for it. And Buell has been known to Goodwill lids with the old style bolts... |
