Jeffro are you telling me that if you're in 1st gear, steady @ 5,000 RPM's, and you let off quick and crack it, you're bike won't flip backwards in a second? This wouldn’t require technique at all, just a brave soul! My bike, only 1 year newer than yours, would flip over in a second. You could power the wheelie up at this RPM very easy, but the problem is you'd have no room on the tach to ride it out and still bring it down to two wheels softly. If your bike doesn't have this power, I'd say you've got a mechanical problem for sure. With a 52” wheel base and 1200cc, these bikes power wheelie very easy.

So whats the easiest and safest way to pull a wheelie? starting from a stand still? Or while moving? Whats the best way to pull a safe one off?

No wheelie is SAFE you have to be willing to take the risk from a pretty much stand still i just pull the clutch in blip (quickly goose the throttle and let off) the throttle to about4 or 5 rpm as im letting out the clutch. this gets it up to balance pretty quick and if I am not careful i 12 o clock it and fall off( as i have done 5 times already). Please do not try this at home or in the public streets.

I second that, "no wheelie is safe." I'd say 1st gear wheelies are much safer than many other addictions on a bike though! Probably the "safest" wheelie for a our bikes, is rolling the bike in 1st gear at about 2500RPM's and clutching the bike up to it's balance point. Watch Craig Jones on Youtube- it's one quick motion with the clutch and throttle. Practice it in a safe, unpopulated, place and start with small wheelies and work your way up. You'll get spooked a few times when you near the balance point, but these big twins engine brake very strong so the back brake "shouldn't" be needed if your at a relatively high RPM. These "safe" wheelies are fun, and something that are very difficult for a crotchrocket inline-4 bike to do due to their lack of low-end torque which, in my opinion, make them that much cooler! Just start small and take your time, nobody perfects the wheelie in one day!

gotcha.. so pretty much 1st gear.. clutch in..slow rolling..rev up to about 2500 -3000 RPM.. let the clutch go and pull back..and balance the bike.. lift the front wheel up and go!

He's slipping the clutch. In other words, not fulling releasing the clutch so that he can bring the front wheel up slower and have better control. If you rev it up and just pop the clutch, you'd have better been spot on with your rpms or have some quick throttle control.

This can wear out your clutch more quickly.

Duff you and I need to get together to make some videos Bro.

Moosestang, I don't believe he's using the cltuch at all. If he does it like I do then he's just "boucing" it up.

On my XB9S, get it in 2nd gear about 50 mph let off it, then when the front dips wack it wide open while standing on the pegs and pulling back on the bars. The front will lift as nice as you could ever ask. Once up I shift to 3rd while the front is in the air. Then it's 3rd all day long.

This is not for the faint of heart. The wind screen will feel like it's going to slap you in the chest and the bike is going to go over backwards, the "balance point". Once it's up and you get used to the balance point it becomes easier. You sort of get used to the feeling and you won't let off the gas.

I need someone to video me......

so how about some pointers for those of us that haven't actually done any wheelies? should we begin by popping the clutch from a stand still or wacking the throttle open from a roll in a particular gear? if so, what speed/rpm/gear should we be going to do this "safely" and to start off small to build confidence?

if i'm rolling in first and wack the throttle, all i seem to get is the wheel getting light and making the bars wobble from side to side as the wheel barely touches the road.

Audi, sounds like you got it down pretty good! I do like to shift in the air sometimes too, like getting onto the highway or somethin. I've been known to shift into 4th as well ; ). I do, however, use the clutch everytime I wheelie. Comes up a lot quicker to the BP. Even after watchin my own vids I wanna go back out and get more footage! Always something new to try or improve.

Spaceman, for those wanting to try a few wheelies, I'd say to use the clutch to start out as well. It'll help you get into the habit so that you don't end up chasing out power wheelies to the rev limiter. Start in 2nd at low rpm's and gradually work your way up in the rpm's while dropping the clutch just to see how high the front end starts comin up. Or maybe just shift from 1st to 2nd (like the title says) at moderate to high rpm's.

Takes alotta practice, and always remember to cover the rear brake! Practice using the brake in a wheelie and make it a habit. Seems like that's the hardest thing for people to learn. I go thru a couple sets of rear brake pads a year. Its worth it : )

Moose, I think I know what you're saying about slipping the clutch. I don't really do it that way. Not sure why you wouldn't fully release the clutch? I'll see if I can, for future reference on this topic, come up with a multiple view video showing my clutch hand and tach while wheelying.

And remember kids, don't try this at home. That way when you run from the cops, they won't know where ya live ; )

It looks that way in the video because the front wheel comes up so easy. Maybe popping the clutch feels more violent than it looks on video. Whenever I tried to pop the clutch on my fzr600, it would come up fast, but I was probably revving it to high.

So you just hold the rpms at 4k, 5k or whatever and just let the lever go?

He is shifting his bodyweight over the rear wheel. This allows the bike to pivot around the rear wheel much more easily as you accellerate.

The bars must give you some more confidence as well I would think.

Yep I let it all the way out. I usually do about 60-65 in 3rd and hafta rev it up pretty hi for a split sec, probly like 6k. As I pop the clutch I rock my weight from front to back. Then when I get to BP, hit the rear brake and balance it out.
