Hey ya'll, I'm going to replace the heads on my xb12, while I have the heads off I decided to slap on some new rings. The motor has 10k on it. Is there any special advise I should be aware of? Any other things I should be concerned about? will I be able to use a conventional ring compressor to fit the jugs over them? Or is there a special HD one? thanks |

need to hone the cylinders and the ring compressor has to have a split in order to remove it from around the rod. cylinder goes onto piston instead of piston and rod going into cylinder. pay attention to ring end and side clearances. tim |

You're going to use a motorcycle specific ring compressor, right? THe automotive ones are too tall. A light hone on the cylinders aids in seating the NEW set of rings.Ring end and side gap is a good precaution, but i've seldom(once?)had to grind the ring end gap.And when i did,it was a set of oversize rings meant to be sized.Best of luck, and NOW is the time to consider new pistons.Perhaps higher CR? How about head work? Cams? My last engine job started as a potential need for head gaskets and quickly shot up to over $5k in engine work alone. Should be exciting times for you indeed!! |

Fresh cross hatch inside the jugs, new piston rings and clean up the top of the pistons. I just did this a few months ago to my Cyclone. I also had a valve job and ported/polished heads done. Along with some new lifters and hotter cams! |
