Gasket remover works and so does aircraft stripper, I'm not sure which works better. That stuff is highly toxic so be careful if you try it. A plastic paint scraper helps a lot. | ||

i used the aircraft stripper to take the powder coating on my primary cover and timing cover off. it work extremely well. but be careful with it. it is some seriously nasty stuff. | ||

Or you could trade for a different color. For example, I would trade white wheels for your gold if they are in good condition.  | ||

When I had my amber wheels powder coated, the guy who ran the business said that the factory amber coating was one of the most robust finishes he's had to remove from motorcycle wheels. I asked if I could have saved some money by stripping them myself. He said 'Yes', but a common mistake is that guys use chemical strippers that sometimes leech into the wheels and can affect the final finish in appearance and/or longevity. | ||

You'll laugh...but brake fluid will take off the coating quite easily and doesn't damage the aluminum. Just brush it on over a catch pan and let it soak awhile and go back and wipe...dispose of used fluid properly. I'd wash them with soapy water a few times afterwards. | ||

As Seth said, I have removed the coating on many, many XB wheels in the last 4 years. I have industrial stripping chemicals and a very powerful media blast room that uses Aluminum Oxide media and I still have trouble getting the trans colored finishes off. The first lot of amber wheels are easy to work with because they were not cured properly from the factory, but since then the OEM coater got the film build and cure times right. Now it is a royal PITA! Anyway a methylene chloride based stripper like Aircraft Paint Remover seems to work the best. Be prepared for multiple applications and lots of elbow grease. Pete | ||
